Chapter 12 - The Nurse Who Set the TrapGloria requested that investigators examine every second of the recording.

The sentence had been assembled from two separate calls.

In the first, Gloria told hospital security:

“The badge will be where we agreed.”

She referred to a controlled evidence operation.

In the second, Evelyn said:

“Do not fail me again.”

Samuel’s software merged the voices to make Gloria appear complicit.

Yet Gloria was not innocent of everything.

She had planted the badge without police authorization.

She had hoped Evelyn would reveal the patent theft and infant records.

She had not warned Hannah.

She had not warned the NICU supervisor.

And she underestimated how far Evelyn would go.

“I wanted proof that could not be sealed,” Gloria said.

“You used Rosalie’s room to get it,” Hannah replied.

“Yes.”

“You believed you could control the risk.”

“Yes.”

“Everyone believed that.”

Gloria lowered her head.

“No one should ask you to forgive that.”

The honesty mattered.

It did not repair the decision.

Mara traced the airfield route.

A charter medical plane waited under a Whitmore Foundation contract. Its crew had received instructions to transport a premature infant under the name Rosalie Whitmore.

Faith would be flown out using Rosalie’s identity.

Police surrounded the aircraft before the baby arrived.

The pilot surrendered.

The medical courier escaped through a maintenance hangar.

Inside the plane, investigators found an incubator, blank birth certificates, and a sealed envelope addressed to Samuel Vale.

The envelope contained the original Whitmore Legacy Trust.

Helen’s stolen patent and company shares would transfer to any verified pair of her descendants only if she personally acknowledged them before two independent witnesses.

Samuel could not activate the clause through DNA alone.

He needed Helen alive and cooperative.

Evelyn had spent decades claiming Helen died.

Samuel had spent decades trying to locate her.

Gloria’s badge trap and Rosalie’s screening finally drew Helen into contact.

The entire NICU crisis had become a beacon.

Hannah realized something worse.

“Samuel may have allowed Evelyn into the room because he wanted Helen to speak.”

Mara nodded.

“He used the attempted attack to force every hidden person to react.”

Rosalie, Brooklyn, Gloria, Hope, Grace, Helen, and Evelyn had all moved into the open.

Samuel could now map the entire family.

Martin Vale reviewed the trust.

A secondary clause named a temporary custodian if Helen refused to appear.

The custodian was Samuel.

If both descendant infants entered his medical care, he could control the company pending verification.

That was why he wanted Rosalie and Faith.

Not to kill them.

To own the legal process around them.

Hannah returned to the NICU.

Rosalie’s breathing remained stable but fragile. Her recovery was not complete, and every disturbance increased risk.

Brooklyn sat beside the recliner under direct security.

No drinks, visitors, or messages reached her without Hannah’s approval.

A sealed evidence courier delivered a new item recovered from Mercy House.

A cassette recorded by Helen thirty-three years earlier.

Her voice was younger.

“If Samuel finds this, tell him I did not abandon him. Evelyn took him before I understood what the Whitmore family was building.”

Samuel had not been excluded because Helen preferred the twins.

He had been stolen first.

Evelyn raised him under another identity, then revealed pieces of the truth whenever she needed his loyalty.

She turned an abandoned child into the administrator of her crimes.

Samuel remained responsible for what he chose as an adult.

But his hatred had been cultivated.

Then the hospital board announced Samuel had contacted them.

He offered to return Faith safely.

His condition was simple:

Hannah must bring Rosalie to the old Whitmore mansion.

No police.

No Gloria.

No Hope or Grace.

Hannah stared at the message.

Samuel knew she would never agree.

The demand had another purpose.

A tracking alert sounded from the visitor badge.

It was no longer inside the evidence locker.

Someone had removed it during the airfield operation.

Its current location appeared inside Hannah’s home.

Brooklyn whispered:

“Grandma knows where we live.”

Hannah shook her head.

“The badge isn’t for Grandma.”

The home security camera activated.
