Chapter 6 - The Wrong BraceletDr. Wells ordered the NICU locked down.

No infant left the unit.

Every visitor, nurse, physician, transport worker, and technician was identified and held for questioning.

Rosalie’s ankle tag displayed the correct name and date of birth, but its internal serial number belonged to another infant.

Baby Jane 17.

The hospital database showed no active patient with that temporary name.

The tag had been created two days before Rosalie was born.

Someone prepared it in advance.

Hannah pressed one hand against the incubator.

“Is that my baby?”

Dr. Wells did not offer false reassurance.

“We need an independent comparison.”

Hannah’s blood and Rosalie’s cord sample were already on file. A rapid maternal test began immediately.

While they waited, Gloria examined the blue blanket inside the incubator.

Hannah had embroidered Rosalie’s initials near one corner before the delivery.

The blanket was genuine.

But it had been removed briefly during a bedding change at 1:58 a.m.

The nurse assigned to the change denied performing it.

Her access badge had been cloned.

The same eight-minute camera blackout could have concealed more than Evelyn entering the room.

Brooklyn listened from the recliner.

“Grandma brought the blanket.”

Hannah turned.

“What do you mean?”

“Before she touched the tube, she fixed it.”

“Did she take Rosalie out?”

“No. The baby was already there.”

“Was anyone else in the room?”

Brooklyn squeezed her stuffed rabbit.

“The doctor man pushed a glass box.”

“What kind of glass box?”

“Like Rosalie’s.”

An incubator.

Brooklyn had seen a second incubator in the room during the blackout.

She thought it belonged to another sick baby.

The man in the white coat moved it through the rear equipment door, a route not visible from the hallway camera.

Hannah ran to the service entrance.

Security logs showed the door opened at 2:04 with credentials belonging to hospital board chairman Dr. Samuel Vale.

Martin Vale’s older brother.

Samuel controlled St. Gabriel’s charitable network and supervised the Whitmore Foundation partnership.

Mara called his office.

Empty.

His driver reported Samuel left the hospital at 2:20 in a medical-transport vehicle.

No destination had been recorded.

The rapid DNA result arrived.

Dr. Wells opened it slowly.

“The infant in this incubator is biologically yours.”

Hannah nearly collapsed with relief.

Rosalie was Rosalie.

The mismatched tag had not accompanied a full switch.

But another infant had entered the room.

Why?

Gloria checked Rosalie’s medical data.

During the blackout, two heart-monitor signals appeared under one patient profile. For six minutes, the system tracked two newborns using the same identity.

Someone had temporarily registered another baby as Rosalie.

One infant remained.

One left.

The ledger’s phrase returned:

Substitute prepared.

Perhaps the other newborn was intended to replace Rosalie after her death.

A baby with falsified records could preserve the appearance of family continuity while erasing the genetic evidence.

Or the second child carried evidence of another hidden birth.

Mara requested all transport records connected to Dr. Samuel Vale.

One destination appeared repeatedly.

Mercy House, a private neonatal recovery residence owned by the Whitmore Foundation.

It officially closed twelve years earlier.

A medical transport had entered the property at 3:01 a.m.

Hope’s phone also pinged near Mercy House before disappearing.

Hannah looked through the glass toward Evelyn.

“You moved Hope and another baby to the same place.”

Evelyn remained silent.

Then Brooklyn’s tablet received a video call.

A woman who looked almost exactly like Hannah appeared on-screen.

Hope.

Her face was bruised, but she was conscious.

Behind her, a second incubator glowed in a dark room.

Hope whispered:

“They took the wrong baby out of St. Gabriel’s.”

“Whose baby is that?”

Hope moved the camera closer.

The newborn wore a tag reading ROSALIE WHITMORE.

Then someone seized Hope from behind.

The image vanished.

👉 Rosalie remained beside Hannah, yet another newborn wearing her identity was being held with Hope inside Mercy House.
