Chapter 8 - Gloria’s Secret ChildGloria denied giving birth.

“I have never been pregnant.”

The hospital placed her on temporary administrative leave while independent investigators reviewed the Mercy House records.

Gloria accepted the suspension but demanded to remain available for Rosalie’s care.

Hannah did not know whether to trust her.

“You knew more than you told me.”

“Yes.”

“You planted the recording badge.”

Gloria looked toward Evelyn’s evidence bag.

“Yes.”

Hannah felt another betrayal settle inside her.

Gloria reconstructed Helen’s badge years earlier and embedded a recorder inside it. She believed Evelyn kept the original access code in the Whitmore Foundation system.

When Evelyn began pressuring Hannah to stop Rosalie’s genetic screening, Gloria suspected she might enter the NICU.

She left the badge where Evelyn’s assistant could find it.

“You used my daughter as bait.”

“I thought she would confess near the incubator.”

“You knew she might touch the equipment.”

“I believed security would intervene before she entered.”

“The cameras went black.”

“I did not know Samuel controlled them.”

“You took that risk with Rosalie.”

Gloria’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Hannah turned away.

Every protector eventually admitted the same thing.

They believed their plan was controlled.

A child carried the consequences.

Gloria explained the false maternity record.

Years earlier, Helen collected and preserved genetic samples from herself, Hannah, Hope, and Gloria’s mother. The Mercy House database later mislabeled one line.

The newborn might not be Gloria’s biological child.

Only independent testing could establish the truth.

Mara obtained Gloria’s consent for comparison.

The result excluded her as the baby’s mother.

The Mercy House file had been falsified.

But the infant remained closely related to Hannah and Hope.

A broader analysis suggested the baby’s mother was their biological half-sister.

Another daughter connected to Helen Cross existed.

Hope searched Helen’s recordings.

One name appeared repeatedly:

Grace Cross.

Grace was born twelve years after the twins.

Helen placed her with a private family after receiving threats from Samuel Vale.

Grace grew up under the name Grace Martin.

She disappeared three months before Rosalie’s birth.

Her medical history showed a recent pregnancy.

The second infant was likely Grace’s daughter.

Why bring the baby into Rosalie’s NICU room?

Samuel could use her as a genetic substitute. Both newborns carried enough Cross-family markers to confuse a rapid identity test while preserving the patent bloodline.

If Evelyn succeeded in harming Rosalie, Grace’s baby could be labeled as the surviving infant.

The state database would still record a Cross descendant, but control over the child would belong to Samuel’s network.

The genetic evidence would become something he could manage.

Hannah looked at Rosalie.

“They weren’t trying only to erase her.”

“They were trying to replace her,” Mara said.

Brooklyn had been listening from the recliner.

“Where is the other baby’s mommy?”

No one knew.

Grace Martin had vanished from a Whitmore-affiliated maternity clinic.

Her car remained in the parking lot.

The clinic claimed she left voluntarily.

Security video showed Dr. Samuel Vale escorting her through a private exit.

Then Hannah’s phone received another file from Hope’s recovered device.

It was an audio recording made inside Mercy House before police arrived.

Samuel spoke with Evelyn.

“You disconnect Hannah’s infant. I move Grace’s child under the Rosalie identity.”

Evelyn replied, “And the state sample?”

“It will show the Cross line without proving which daughter survived.”

“What about Brooklyn?”

“She remains the leverage. If Hannah resists, the older child goes to family care.”

Hannah held Brooklyn close.

Samuel’s voice continued:

“Once the swap is complete, Gloria takes the blame.”

Gloria listened in silence.

Evelyn had attempted to harm Rosalie.

Samuel planned to erase Rosalie’s identity.

And Gloria had opened the door by creating the badge trap.

Then a hospital administrator entered.

He carried a court order transferring Rosalie to a private neonatal facility for “evidence protection.”

The destination was controlled by Samuel Vale.

👉 Gloria’s badge captured the replacement plan, but Samuel’s legal network was already trying to remove Rosalie from Hannah’s protection.
