Chapter 10 - the reason colleen made the call
Lucy confronted Colleen in the presence of Detective Kim.
The older woman listened to the voicemail twice.
“That isn’t what it sounds like.”
“You said you would make sure I found the box after it was too late.”
“Margaret believed I was helping her.”
“Were you?”
“I was trying to keep Robert alive.”
Colleen explained that Margaret discovered Robert had hidden documents. She ordered Colleen to locate them.
Colleen pretended to cooperate.
At the barbecue, she heard Margaret and Chelsea planning to overdose Robert and blame Lucy.
She said the line about the box so they would stop watching her.
“Why wait until night to call me?”
“Because Chelsea followed me home.”
“You could have called police.”
“I had already lied to police after Nathan’s crash. I thought they would dismiss me.”
Detective Kim answered:
“You decided that without trying.”
“Yes.”
Colleen admitted the plan was flawed.
She expected Lucy to retrieve the box before returning to the house.
She did not expect Robert to collapse so quickly.
“Why tell me Dany’s birthday opened it?”
“Robert gave me that clue.”
“Why not give me the key earlier?”
“I was afraid the box contained proof I carried Dany from the clinic.”
Again, self-protection had delayed truth.
Colleen had helped expose Margaret and Chelsea.
She also managed the timing to protect herself.
Detective Kim did not arrest her immediately. Her false statements about the crash and adoption remained under investigation.
Lucy left without resolving whether she could ever trust her again.
The financial audit clarified the barbecue strategy.
Chelsea and Margaret needed Robert declared incapacitated before Lydia filed the amended trust.
They planned to claim Lucy mishandled his medication during an emotional argument.
The family gathering created witnesses to Lucy leaving angrily.
Margaret’s repeated voicemails established that Lucy remained responsible for the pills.
Chelsea had placed Lucy’s old fingerprints on the organizer by using one Lucy filled months earlier.
Then Dany’s humiliation ensured Lucy would refuse to return.
The cruelty was operational.
They used the one insult guaranteed to make her leave.
The diner receipt, Maya’s testimony, Robert’s recording, and toxicology destroyed the setup.
Without those, Lucy could have faced criminal investigation while Margaret and Chelsea obtained guardianship.
Lydia froze all family-company assets.
The audit showed $2.4 million moved through Chelsea’s vendors over five years.
Part had financed her business.
Part paid Owen Marsh, Dr. Blake, and the towing company.
Another series of payments went to a maternity clinic and the adoption agency that placed Dany.
Margaret had used stolen company money to erase Nathan’s son from the family record.
Grant signed over his interest in Chelsea’s company for restitution.
He did not ask Lucy to thank him.
Robert’s condition improved slowly.
He remained weak but mentally clear.
During a recorded statement, he confirmed the trust, medication log, and Nathan investigation.
He could not identify the pickup driver.
He said Nathan once told him:
“Chelsea is afraid of the man who owns Owen.”
Owen Marsh had been a deputy.
Who “owned” him?
Campaign records showed Owen received unusual payments through the sheriff’s reelection fund.
The largest donor was family attorney Charles Vance.
Vance had prepared Margaret’s unauthorized loan, Robert’s forged power of attorney, and Dany’s adoption paperwork.
He had never appeared publicly in the conflict.
Lydia searched his old files.
Charles Vance was also Elise Warren’s court-appointed attorney during the supposed surrender.
No record showed he ever met her.
He certified that she voluntarily gave up Dany.
Police searched his office.
Vance had left the country the previous week.
Inside a locked cabinet they found copies of Elise’s identity documents, Nathan’s company records, and photographs of Lucy’s house.
The most recent photograph showed Dany leaving preschool.
Dated two days earlier.
Chelsea was missing.
Vance was gone.
Someone had still been watching the child.
That afternoon, the preschool called Lucy.
Margaret had returned with another forged order.
This time, she did not come alone.
A masked man entered through the side gate while staff spoke to her at the front office.
By the time the alarm sounded, Dany was gone.
