Chapter 11 - the tracker heading north
Lucy drove with Detective Kim while police followed Dany’s tracker.
The signal moved north, then west toward Robert’s old lake cabin.
Grant rode in another vehicle with state officers.
Margaret had been detained at the preschool.
She claimed she knew nothing about the masked man.
Security footage showed her looking toward the side gate three times while speaking to staff.
She had timed the distraction.
The tracker stopped near a rural road.
Then it moved again.
“Someone found it,” Kim said.
The signal accelerated in the opposite direction.
The kidnapper had removed the tracker and thrown it into a passing truck.
Lucy gripped the dashboard.
“He knows our safety plan.”
Only a few people knew Dany’s shoes carried trackers.
Lucy.
Maya.
Grant.
The preschool director.
Aunt Colleen.
Detective Kim looked at her.
“Who helped buy them?”
“Colleen.”
The state police searched her apartment.
Empty.
Her car was gone.
Lucy called repeatedly.
No answer.
Then Dany’s voice came through a video message.
He sat in the back seat of a vehicle holding his stuffed dinosaur.
“Mommy, Aunt Colleen says we’re going to see the lady who made me.”
Colleen’s voice spoke from the front.
“Tell her you’re safe.”
Dany looked confused.
“I want fries.”
The video ended.
Lucy’s fear changed into fury.
Colleen had taken him.
But the message did not sound like a ransom.
She believed she was delivering Dany to Elise.
Police traced the video upload to the lake-cabin road.
At the cabin, they found Colleen’s car abandoned.
Inside were food wrappers, Dany’s jacket, and a map leading to an old rail depot near the state line.
A handwritten note lay on the passenger seat.
Lucy,
Elise is alive. Margaret will kill her if police arrive first. I am taking Dany because Elise will not trust anyone without seeing him.
I know you will hate me. I am trying to correct what I did.
Lucy crushed the note in her fist.
Colleen had repeated the same violation.
She used Dany in a plan because she believed the outcome justified removing his choice and Lucy’s authority.
Detective Kim requested aerial support.
The rail depot stood near an abandoned freight line and several warehouse buildings.
Before officers arrived, Grant received a call from Chelsea.
“Tell Lucy to stop.”
“Where is Dany?”
“With Colleen.”
“Who has Elise?”
Chelsea became silent.
Grant said, “If you help them hurt that child, I will testify to everything.”
“You already did.”
“I will tell Dany one day that you watched his father die.”
Chelsea’s breath caught.
“I didn’t know Owen would hit him.”
“You were on the bridge.”
“I wanted the records.”
“You let him die for them.”
Chelsea’s voice cracked.
“Charles planned it. He said Nathan would stop once the truck touched him.”
Charles Vance was the pickup driver.
Owen Marsh sat beside him.
Chelsea had followed to retrieve records, believing they would frighten Nathan into surrendering.
The second impact sent him over the bridge.
“Where is Charles now?” Grant asked.
“With Elise.”
The rail depot became a hostage site.
State police established a perimeter.
Lucy refused to remain behind.
Detective Kim allowed her near the negotiator because Dany might respond only to her.
Inside the depot, Colleen held Dany behind a rusted freight car.
Across the building, Chelsea stood beside Charles Vance.
A thin woman was tied to a chair.
Elise.
Charles held a pistol.
“You brought police,” he shouted.
Colleen answered:
“I brought Dany.”
Elise lifted her head when she heard the name.
Dany stared at her.
The resemblance to Nathan was unmistakable.
Lucy entered through the side door with her hands visible.
“Dany.”
He ran toward her.
Charles raised the pistol.
Colleen stepped between them.
The shot struck a metal beam.
Police moved.
Chelsea dropped to the floor.
Grant pulled Elise’s chair behind cover.
Lucy reached Dany and shielded him as officers surrounded Charles.
He fired again, then disappeared through a maintenance tunnel before the perimeter closed.
Colleen was arrested for kidnapping despite helping protect Dany from the shot.
She looked at Lucy.
“I brought him to his mother.”
Lucy held Dany tighter.
“I am his mother.”
Colleen lowered her eyes.
Elise was taken to a hospital under protection.
Before the ambulance left, she gripped Lucy’s hand.
“Nathan said you were the only person he trusted with our son.”
Lucy looked toward Colleen.
“Then why didn’t you come?”
Elise’s eyes filled with terror.
