Chapter 8 - the emergency pickup order

Detective Kim reopened Nathan’s crash as a suspected homicide.
Chelsea refused an interview.
Her attorney called the motel receipt unreliable and Colleen an admitted liar.
Owen Marsh, now a county sheriff’s captain, denied knowing Chelsea personally.
Phone records contradicted him.
They had exchanged forty-three calls during the week before Nathan died.
Grant moved out of the family home.
He did not immediately join Lucy’s side. He said he needed to determine what Chelsea had done without turning every suspicion into fact.
Lucy respected that caution more than the silence he had shown at the barbecue.
Dany’s preschool increased security after Margaret attempted to visit without permission.
Three days later, the office received an emergency pickup order bearing a judge’s electronic seal.
It authorized Margaret to remove Dany because Lucy had been hospitalized following a psychiatric crisis.
The order was false.
The receptionist called Lucy before releasing him.
Margaret arrived carrying a suitcase, Dany’s passport, and a stuffed dinosaur from his bedroom.
Police detained her in the parking lot.
She claimed Chelsea had sent the order and told her Lucy consented.
“Why bring his passport?” Detective Kim asked.
“We were taking him to visit family.”
“Where?”
Margaret requested an attorney.
The suitcase contained clothing for a week and a one-way airline ticket to Arizona.
Dany had never met anyone there.
The ticket had been purchased through Chelsea’s company account.
The attempted removal strengthened Lucy’s custody case and added possible kidnapping charges.
Margaret was released under strict conditions while investigators determined her knowledge.
That night, Dany asked:
“Why did Grandma bring my dinosaur?”
Lucy sat beside his bed.
“She wanted to take you somewhere without asking me.”
“Because I’m real family now?”
The question broke something inside her.
“You were always real family.”
“She didn’t think so.”
“She knew you were Grandpa’s grandson.”
Dany frowned.
“Then why did she lie?”
“Because the truth changed something she wanted.”
“Fries?”
“More than fries.”
He thought for a while.
“Can she stop being my grandma?”
Lucy did not tell him biology was permanent in ways that forced relationships.
“You can decide who feels safe to you.”
The following morning, Grant requested a meeting.
He carried company bank records and an old phone backup.
Chelsea had used his family business to move money through fake event vendors. He believed the payments covered property renovations.
One transfer occurred the day before Nathan’s crash.
Recipient: Owen Marsh.
Memo: security consultation.
Another paid a private towing company to destroy a damaged pickup.
Grant had also found a text Nathan sent him hours before the crash.
Chelsea followed me from Robert’s office. If she says I stole anything, check the warehouse invoices.
Grant had never seen it.
Chelsea accessed his phone that evening and deleted the message.
The cloud backup restored it years later.
“Why would Nathan text you?” Lucy asked.
“He thought I was honest.”
“Were you?”
Grant looked toward the floor.
“I was convenient. I didn’t ask how Chelsea’s company grew so fast because I liked believing I had helped.”
His silence had not caused Nathan’s death.
It had allowed stolen money to become family success.
Grant agreed to cooperate fully.
He also offered to help protect Dany.
Lucy answered carefully.
“You do not become safe because you finally chose the right side.”
“I know.”
“Then keep choosing it.”
At the hospital, Robert regained enough strength to answer simple questions.
Detective Kim showed him photographs.
The blue tablets.
Chelsea’s red sedan.
The burned pickup.
Owen Marsh.
Robert pointed at Marsh, then toward the word garage on a communication board.
Police searched Chelsea and Grant’s garage under warrant.
Behind a false panel they found unused sedatives, Robert’s missing pill organizer, and a water-damaged mobile phone.
The serial number belonged to Nathan.
Forensic technicians began extracting data.
The first recovered image showed Chelsea arguing with Nathan outside Robert’s office.
The second showed a dark pickup behind them.
The third file was a video.
Nathan’s voice said:
“If anything happens tonight, Chelsea knows who Owen is protecting.”

The screen went black before he named the person.
👉 Nathan’s phone linked Chelsea and Owen Marsh to the crash, but his final video suggested both were protecting someone more powerful.
