Chapter 9 - the red sedan on the bridge
Technicians recovered forty-seven seconds of video from Nathan’s damaged phone.
He had placed it inside a dashboard mount.
Snow struck the windshield as he drove.
Chelsea’s red sedan followed closely.
Nathan spoke toward the camera.
“Dad, Chelsea moved the vendor money. Owen Marsh is helping her hide it.”
He looked into the rearview mirror.
“There’s a truck behind her.”
The red sedan accelerated and pulled beside him.
Chelsea lowered her window.
The audio became distorted by wind.
Nathan shouted:
“I copied everything!”
Chelsea answered:
“You don’t understand what Mom signed!”
The word Mom changed the direction of the investigation.
Nathan had not only accused Chelsea.
Margaret had signed something connected to the theft.
A dark pickup entered the frame from behind.
The video jolted.
Nathan swore.
The truck struck his rear bumper once.
Then again.
Nathan’s car moved toward the bridge rail.
The final clear image reflected the pickup driver in Nathan’s side mirror.
A man.
Not Chelsea.
His face remained partly hidden by a cap.
The passenger was visible for one second.
Owen Marsh.
The driver was unidentified.
Chelsea’s sedan braked before the impact.
She may not have driven the truck.
She had still been present, knew the attack was coming, and never reported it.
Detective Kim arrested Owen Marsh for conspiracy, evidence tampering, and obstruction while the homicide investigation continued.
He refused to name the driver.
Chelsea was charged with financial crimes and conspiracy related to the crash.
She disappeared before police reached her attorney’s office.
Her car was found near the airport.
No confirmed flight record existed.
Grant surrendered her passport, but Chelsea possessed several false corporate identities.
Margaret denied knowing where she went.
Robert watched the recovered video from his hospital bed.
When Chelsea said, “You don’t understand what Mom signed,” he became agitated.
Lucy gave him the communication board.
He slowly selected:
deed
loan
Nathan
Margaret had apparently signed a property deed or loan using Nathan’s branch of the family company.
Lydia audited older records.
One month before the crash, Margaret authorized Chelsea to borrow against Nathan’s future inheritance as though he had already transferred it.
Nathan discovered the transaction.
If he exposed it, Margaret could face fraud charges and lose the family house.
Chelsea’s theft had begun as an attempt to cover Margaret’s unauthorized loan.
Mother and daughter protected each other until financial fraud became fatal.
Robert wrote one more word.
Blake.
Dr. Owen Blake had notarized the old loan documents and later supplied Robert’s sedatives.
He had served the same family strategy for years: use professional papers to make theft appear lawful and resistance appear confused.
Police arrested Blake after finding Robert’s medication inside his clinic.
His files contained drafted capacity reports for both Robert and Nathan.
Nathan’s was never used because he died first.
The report described him as unstable, paranoid, and financially reckless.
It had been written before the crash.
They had prepared two ways to silence him.
Declare him incompetent.
Or allow the bridge to do it.
Lucy visited Margaret under supervised conditions.
“Who drove the pickup?”
Margaret looked older than her sixty-eight years.
“I don’t know.”
“Did you know they were following Nathan?”
“I knew Chelsea wanted the records back.”
“Did you authorize force?”
“No.”
“What did you sign?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with anger.
“Your father was going to let Nathan destroy the house.”
“Nathan discovered fraud.”
“He threatened to call the bank.”
“Because you borrowed against money that wasn’t yours.”
“I was keeping Chelsea’s company alive.”
“Why?”
“Because she had a future.”
Lucy stared at her.
“And Nathan didn’t?”
“He was always ready to leave us.”
“So you erased his son too.”
Margaret’s composure cracked.
“I gave Dany to you.”
“You stole him from his mother and called it a gift.”
Margaret stood.
The guard ordered her to sit.
She leaned toward Lucy.
“Elise was not safe.”
“Because of whom?”
“She knew the driver.”
Lucy stopped.
Margaret realized she had said too much.
“Elise witnessed the crash?”
“She knew what Nathan planned.”
“Where is she?”
Margaret’s face closed again.
Then Robert’s nurse called Lucy.
A voicemail had been recovered from his old phone.
Recorded during the barbecue.
Margaret’s voice said:
“By morning, Lucy will be the only one who touched the pills.”
Chelsea answered:
“And Dany’s claim dies with Robert’s capacity.”
The recording captured the inheritance and medication plan together.
Then a third voice entered.
Aunt Colleen.

“I’ll make sure Lucy finds the box after it’s too late.”
👉 Colleen had presented herself as Robert’s frightened ally, but the barbecue recording suggested she had been part of the plan surrounding the hidden box.
