“Did you consent?”
“I signed a general treatment form while sedated.”
The recovered files showed that Celia had signed fertility documents under Claire’s identity at thirty.
Family Harmony later combined genetic material registered to “Claire Bennett” with Daniel’s archived sample.
The resulting embryo had been transferred to an unidentified woman.
The procedure occurred four months before Lily was conceived naturally.
A girl had been born seven months before Lily.
Her program identity was:
LILY BENNETT A.
Claire’s daughter was later labeled:
LILY BENNETT B.
The envelope Diane kept had been prepared before Claire gave birth.
Ruth had not started tracking Lily after her birth.
The network expected her because it had already created another child carrying the same genetic parents and intended identity.
Claire stared at Daniel.
“We have a biological daughter neither of us knew existed.”
Daniel looked ill.
“A child created from stolen material.”
“Yes.”
The distinction mattered.
The girl was biologically connected to them.
That did not mean Claire could arrive and claim motherhood over the person who had carried or raised her.
The maternal-transfer file had been removed from Samuel’s archive thirty minutes before his arrest.
Gabriel was the last person who accessed it.
He remained hospitalized under guard.
Anna requested permission to visit him.
Collins allowed a monitored conversation.
Gabriel’s face was bruised where Samuel had struck him.
“You saved the file,” Anna said.
“I took it.”
“Why?”
“Because Samuel planned to put the child into another replica house.”
“Where is she?”
Gabriel looked toward the camera.
“What will Claire do if I tell her?”
“Search for a child who may be in danger.”
“Will she call herself the mother?”
“That is her decision.”
“No.”
Anna corrected herself.
“It is also the child’s.”
Gabriel studied her.
For the first time, Anna had not offered certainty about someone else’s relationship.
He gave Collins a church address in North Carolina.
New Covenant Family Mission.
The organization operated international adoption retreats and summer camps.
Its director was Grace Caldwell.
Ruth’s legal daughter.
Diane had never known Ruth had a child.
Ruth refused to speak at first.
Then Claire brought the genetic report into the interview room.
“Grace is raising a child created from Daniel’s and my stolen samples.”
Ruth’s expression changed.
“Grace cannot have children.”
“This was not an ordinary pregnancy.”
Ruth looked toward the guard.
“Samuel gave her an infant and said Anna’s bloodline needed one child outside his direct control.”
“Why?”
“In case Claire and Celia both rejected the trust.”
“Did Grace know who the child was?”
“She knew the mother’s legal name was Claire Bennett.”
Ruth admitted visiting the mission twice.
The girl had light brown hair, gray eyes, and a crescent birthmark near her temple.
Grace called her Lillian.
She was nearly four.
Claire felt the biological recognition arrive before any real relationship existed.
She refused to mistake the feeling for entitlement.
