Chapter 6 - THE HEARING UNDER CLAIRE’S NAMEThe mediation center closed its public offices at five.
At six-thirty, lights remained on in one private courtroom.
Detective Collins obtained an emergency warrant while Claire watched from a secure hospital room.
Celia sat before a retired judge wearing Claire’s blue coat. Her hair, makeup, posture, and voice closely matched her sister’s.
Diane stood beside police at the rear entrance.
When she saw Celia through the glass, she whispered, “She looks more like you than you do.”
Claire heard the words through the call.
“That is because someone trained her to.”
Celia presented the forged guardianship petition. She claimed a woman impersonating her had taken Lily from church after suffering a mental breakdown.
Calvin Shaw testified that he had known “the real Claire” for years.
He described the hospital Claire as unstable, aggressive, and obsessed with church conspiracies.
The retired judge appeared uncertain.
Then Celia produced childhood photographs.
Some showed her inside Diane’s house, sitting in Claire’s bedroom, and attending Claire’s school events.
They were composites created from the church archive.
Others may have been real.
Ruth had placed Celia near Claire repeatedly without either twin knowing.
A legal identity had been built from overlapping evidence.
When officers entered, Calvin ran toward a secured records room.
He was arrested before reaching it.
Celia did not resist.
She looked directly at Detective Collins.
“I asked for police weeks ago.”
“Why impersonate your sister?”
“Because Ruth controls Emma.”
“Where is Ruth?”
Celia looked toward the camera carrying Claire’s live feed.
“She is closer to Lily than any of you.”
Claire checked the hospital room immediately.
Lily slept beside a uniformed officer.
No one unfamiliar appeared nearby.
Celia explained that she had been raised inside Family Harmony residences. Ruth told her Diane stole Claire and that one day Celia would have to reclaim the life taken from her.
She studied Claire’s records from childhood.
At sixteen, she was instructed to appear briefly at Claire’s school while Claire was absent. At twenty-three, she opened a bank account under Claire’s name. At thirty, she signed consent forms for fertility testing using Claire’s identity.
“They made you practice replacing me,” Claire said.
“Yes.”
“And you agreed to take Lily?”
Celia’s face broke.
“I agreed to enter the church. I did not agree to remove her.”
“Yet you went to court.”
“Ruth said Emma would disappear if I refused.”
The same leverage had controlled Diane.
Information in exchange for obedience.
A child in exchange for betrayal.
Celia claimed the man pounding on the classroom door was Calvin. He wanted the folder before Pastor Javier could see the photographs.
She remained in the hallway because she hoped Claire would leave with Lily before the exchange began.
“Why didn’t you warn me?”
“I approached you once last year.”
Claire remembered a woman in a grocery-store parking lot who called her Clara. Claire assumed she was confused.
“You ran away.”
“Calvin was watching.”
Celia had spent her entire life believing surveillance made honesty impossible.
It did not make her innocent.
She had signed documents, entered Claire’s home once while the family was away, and brought Emma to the observation room.
She wanted the Pierce trust.
Not only for money.
She believed it contained Anna’s records and the identity of Emma’s biological father.
“You were willing to destroy me to learn who you were,” Claire said.
Celia lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
Detective Collins arrested her for identity fraud while noting her cooperation.
Calvin’s phone contained current messages from Ruth.
The latest read:
The wrong sister entered court. Begin hospital collection.
Claire looked toward Lily’s room.
The uniformed officer beside the bed suddenly removed his radio.
He was not the officer assigned to the hallway.
The real officer had been found unconscious inside a supply closet.
The impostor lifted Lily from the bed.
