Chapter 20 - THE EMPTY SEAT ON THE BUSPolice located the bus near the state border.

It stood abandoned beside an old roadside chapel.

All twelve children remained inside.

Grace Caldwell was gone.

No child appeared physically injured.

Each wore different clothing except Lillian, who remained in the yellow dress.

A thirteenth seat near the driver was empty.

The seat belt had been cut.

Claire watched the rescue through Collins’s secure feed.

The children were removed one at a time and introduced to independent advocates.

No official called them “adoption cases.”

No one asked which family they wanted before explaining what had happened.

Lillian refused to leave the bus.

She held the seat in front of her with both hands.

“Mommy said people with cameras steal children.”

A child specialist sat on the bus floor.

“Which mommy?”

“Mommy Grace.”

“Is Grace your mommy?”

Lillian nodded.

The answer did not become false because the pregnancy had been fraudulent.

Grace had raised her.

That bond required examination—not automatic destruction.

Claire remained off-camera.

She did not want her face to become another test.

The specialist asked about the empty seat.

Lillian looked toward the cut belt.

“That was Lily.”

“Are you Lily?”

“Sometimes.”

“What is your other name?”

“Lillian.”

“Who sat there?”

The child whispered:

“Mommy Claire.”

Claire felt cold.

A woman had traveled with Grace while using her name.

The bus camera had been removed, but traffic footage showed a dark-haired woman in the front passenger seat.

Her face remained hidden.

Daniel recognized her coat.

A copy of the blue coat from the Grace Harbor studio.

The thirteenth person was not another child.

It was another replacement Claire.

Grace had taken the woman when she fled.

Lillian agreed to leave the bus after the specialist promised no one would cut, dye, or wash her hair without permission.

At the temporary care center, she saw Claire through a glass wall.

The resemblance was clear but not identical.

Lillian had Daniel’s eyebrows and Claire’s birthmark.

She did not react as though she recognized her biological mother.

Claire was relieved.

Recognition would have meant more training.

“My name is Claire,” she said.

“Mommy Grace said Claire takes children.”

“I’m not taking you anywhere today.”

“Are you my birth mommy?”

“Doctors believe my body and Daniel’s helped create you.”

Lillian frowned.

“Did I live in your tummy?”

“No.”

“Then Grace is my mommy.”

“She may be one of the people you understand as your mother.”

“Are you mad?”

“No.”

Claire meant it.

Pain and jealousy existed.

But neither gave her the right to erase a child’s history.

Lillian studied her face.

“You look like Blue Mommy.”

The replacement Claire.

“What does Blue Mommy do?”

“She practices being you.”

Detective Collins searched the roadside chapel.

Inside, officers found Grace’s phone and a folder containing the records of all twelve children.

The thirteenth file belonged to the replacement Claire.

Her name was Miriam Voss.

She had entered Family Harmony after losing custody of her infant during a disputed psychiatric hospitalization.

Samuel promised to restore her child if she trained to replace Claire.

Her missing daughter was Olivia Hart.

Rebecca’s Olivia.

The records contradicted everything recovered earlier.

Either Miriam had been deceived into believing Olivia was hers—

or Family Harmony had created overlapping maternal claims around Olivia just as it had around Lily.

Grace called from an unknown number.

“I did not abandon the bus.”

“Where are you?” Collins asked.

“Miriam forced me out.”

“Why?”

“She said Claire had already taken Olivia and Lillian. She’s going to correct the first loss.”

“Where?”

Grace hesitated.

Then she said:

“Claire’s house.”

Security cameras at Claire’s real home activated.

Miriam stood inside Lily’s bedroom wearing the blue coat.

Beside her was Olivia.

The child still held Lily’s paper crown.

Miriam knelt before her.

“I’m your real mother.”

Olivia looked toward the hidden camera.

Then she whispered:

May you like

“Claire said I don’t have to choose today.”

👉 The missing thirteenth passenger entered Claire’s real home with Olivia, intending to reclaim the child through the same forced-choice method Claire had taught her to reject.
