Chapter 15 - Helen Leaves for Real

Legal separation became divorce.

Helen filed.

Dad blamed notebook.

Then me.

Then Laura.

Then therapy.

Anything except himself.

Helen did not claim Richard physically abused her in the way he had harmed children.

She described control.

Money decisions.

Social pressure.

Rules.

Anger.

A marriage where disagreement became betrayal.

Property division ordinary.

House.

Retirement.

Savings.

No secret trust.

No hidden fortune.

She moved into a two-bedroom condo.

One room became sewing space.

Not Ethan’s room.

Important.

She did not build a nursery and wait for reinstatement.

She accepted visits where we allowed.

Then she gave me one box.

My childhood notebook originals had been returned after copying once no longer needed? Some remained evidence until case closure. She gave personal duplicates/other childhood items, not evidence. Let's say copies.

Inside was my old blue blanket’s satin corner.

I stared.

“How?”

“I cut it off before Richard burned the rest.”

My eyes filled.

“You kept this?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

I almost became furious.

Then stopped.

She had preserved one piece while lying about the whole.

Human contradiction.

I said:

“I don’t want it.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

I expected her to be hurt.

She wasn’t.

“Throw it away?”

“No. You decide.”

She put it back in her bag.

Good.

My past did not need a relic.

Then I asked:

“Did Dad ever apologize to me?”

Mom looked down.

“No.”

“Did you?”

“I said I was sorry you were upset.”

I laughed.

“That’s not apology.”

“I know.”

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry I lied about what happened.”

Then:

“I’m sorry I helped him call fear training.”

Then:

“I’m sorry I used how you turned out as permission to do it to Ethan.”

That one hit.

I believed her.

Forgiveness?

Not complete.

Trust?

Limited.

Relationship?

May you like

Possible.

That was enough.
