Chapter 25 - Ethan Speaks to Grandpa

Ethan was almost six when he asked.
“Can I see Grandpa?”
I nearly dropped the dish I was drying.
Laura stopped.
“Why?”
“I want tell him.”
“What?”
Ethan frowned.
“That I have orange bike.”
That was not enough reason alone.
Then:
“And I can cry.”
There.
We called Dr. Grant.
She did not say yes immediately.
She met Ethan.
Then us.
Then Richard separately.
Conditions:
Therapeutic setting.
Thirty minutes.
No gifts.
No touching without permission.
No discussion of court.
No defending old practices.
If Ethan says stop, visit ends.
Dad agreed.
He arrived early.
I stayed in observation room with Laura.
Ethan entered carrying Felix.
Dad saw him and covered his mouth.
Dr. Grant said:
“Richard.”
He lowered hand.
“Hi, Ethan.”
“Hi.”
Silence.
Then Ethan:
“I got orange bike.”
Dad smiled.
“Your dad told me.”
“You don’t take wheels.”
“No.”
“Even if I cry.”
“No.”
“Even if I say can’t.”
Dad swallowed.
“No.”
Ethan stared.
“Why?”
Dad looked at Dr. Grant.
She nodded that he could answer.
“Because I thought making you continue would make fear go away.”
“Did?”
“No.”
“Made bigger.”
Dad’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Then Ethan:
“You broke green.”
“Yes.”
“Blue.”
“Yes.”
“Daddy broke car.”
Dad almost smiled.
“Yes.”
“Everybody broke stuff.”
I heard Laura exhale beside me.
Dad said:
“Yes.”
Ethan hugged Felix.
“Stupid.”
Dad laughed once through tears.
“Very.”
Then:
“I’m sorry I broke your bicycles.”
Ethan nodded.
“I’m sorry I didn’t listen when you said stop.”
Another nod.
Then Dad asked:
“Would you like me to say anything else?”
Ethan thought.
“No.”
That mattered.
Dad did not make apology speech longer because he needed forgiveness.
Then:
“Can I hug you?”
Ethan looked at him.
“No.”
Dad’s face hurt.
He answered:
“Okay.”
At twenty-two minutes Ethan said:
“Done.”
Dr. Grant stood.
The visit ended.
No extension.
No:
Just five more minutes.
No adult deciding his stop was avoidance.
When Ethan came out, he grabbed my hand.
“Can we get ice cream?”
“Yes.”
Laura laughed.
“Dinner’s in an hour.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Grandpa practice says snack after.”
We all froze.
Then he grinned.
A joke.
May you like
For the first time, the phrase belonged to him instead of the fear.
We got ice cream.
