Garrett Hale froze in the middle of his Long Island wedding estate.
Five hundred guests waited beyond the floral arch.
The orchestra had already started.
Coraline Ashford stood behind him in her bridal gown, veil moving in the golden-hour breeze, furious that the ceremony had stopped for a woman in a soaked pastel dress holding a little girl.
Mave Whitlock held Posie tightly against her chest.

Garrett turned so sharply the guests nearest them went silent.
“Do not speak about my daughter that way.”

Mave’s arms tightened around Posie.
Garrett looked back at her, voice lower now.
“Why did you hide her from me?”
Mave’s eyes filled with years of pain.
“I didn’t leave you. Your mother made me disappear.”
Garrett’s jaw tightened.
His gaze flicked past Coraline toward the older man in black behind her.
The man looked away.
Coraline grabbed for Garrett’s arm.
He pulled free.
“Wesley, close the gates.”
Security moved instantly.
