Chapter 2

Mave had not planned to step into the wedding.
She came only because Posie had asked one question that morning.
“Does Daddy know me?”
Mave had no answer that did not break something.
For three years, she had told herself distance was protection.
She lived quietly.
Changed numbers.
Changed cities.
Changed the way she signed her name.
Not because she hated Garrett.
Because someone powerful had made it clear that if she stayed, Posie would become leverage before she ever learned to speak.
So Mave disappeared.
Not dramatically.
Not by choice.
Efficiently.
Completely.
Until the wedding invitation appeared under her apartment door with no return address.
A photograph of Garrett and Coraline.
A date.
A place.
A handwritten line at the bottom:
Come before he belongs to someone else forever.
Mave should have burned it.
Instead, she dressed Posie in her pastel floral dress, drove through rain, and arrived at the estate soaked, terrified, and too late to remain invisible.
The moment Garrett saw Posie, the entire lie cracked open.
Not because of proof.
Not because of documents.
