Chapter 9

Coraline tried to regain the ceremony.
She lifted her chin, turned toward the guests, and smiled as if this were a misunderstanding that money could smooth over.
“Everyone, please remain calm,” she said.
No one moved.
The musicians had stopped.
The champagne servers stood frozen.
Security quietly closed the last open pathway near the garden gate.
Wesley’s men did not threaten anyone.
They simply made leaving difficult.
Garrett looked past Coraline toward his family.
His voice lowered.
“Who knew?”
No one answered.
That silence was louder than confession.
Mave whispered, “Garrett, not in front of Posie.”
He turned toward her immediately.
The rage in his face softened when he saw the child’s eyes wide with fear.
“You’re right.”
He looked at Wesley.
“Clear the guests back from the aisle. Keep them inside the estate.”
Wesley obeyed.
Coraline stepped forward.
“And me?”
Garrett did not answer.
That terrified her more than any insult.
Because the wedding was no longer the most important thing happening.
