part 2

PART 2
A year earlier, Evelyn still believed her marriage could survive silence.
That was the first lie she told herself.
Adrian Vale was not cruel at the beginning.
Not loudly.
Not obviously.
He arrived in Evelyn’s life like weather after a drought.
Expensive flowers.
Private dinners.
Long drives along the coast in a black car with tinted windows.
He told her she made him feel human.
She believed him because she wanted the man beneath the money to be real.
For a while, he was.
Then the Vale family board began pressuring him for an heir.
Not a child.
An heir.
There is a difference.
Adrian changed after that.
He stopped asking Evelyn how she felt.
He started asking if she had scheduled another fertility appointment.
He stopped holding her hand at galas.
He started correcting her answers in front of donors.
Celeste appeared six months later.
Officially, she was a strategic consultant for Vale Holdings.
Unofficially, she became the woman who laughed at Adrian’s jokes before he finished them.
She wore red to every event.
She called Evelyn “sweet” in the tone women use when they mean weak.
Adrian said Evelyn was imagining things.
Then he began staying out late.
Then sleeping in the city penthouse.
Then sending lawyers to handle conversations he no longer wanted to have.
One night, during a charity dinner, a board member joked that Adrian still had time to “trade up before the bloodline stalled.”
Celeste laughed.
Adrian did not defend Evelyn.
He only lifted his glass.
That was the night Evelyn stopped trying to be chosen by a man who had made humiliation part of the furniture.
Two weeks later, she learned she was pregnant.
She bought a tiny pair of socks before telling anyone.
Then she went home and found divorce papers on the dining table.
Adrian stood beside them in his navy suit.
Celeste waited in the doorway like a verdict.
Adrian said, “This marriage has become inconvenient.”
Evelyn touched her stomach.
He did not notice.
Then he said the sentence she would carry all the way to court.
“You were never enough.”
That night, Evelyn packed one suitcase and left without telling him about the baby.
Not out of cruelty.
May you like
Out of survival.
