PART 9

Adrian asked to meet Noah three days later.

Not in private.

Not at his penthouse.

Not under the old rules.

In a supervised family room at the courthouse, with Margaret outside, a guardian ad litem present, and Evelyn holding the right to leave at any moment.

He arrived without Celeste.

Without a navy suit.

Without the arrogant smile.

He wore a gray sweater and looked like he had not slept.

Evelyn sat in a chair with Noah in her arms.

Adrian stopped at the doorway.

For once, he waited to be invited in.

Evelyn noticed.

She hated that she noticed.

“You can sit.”

He sat across from her.

Noah woke then, blinking slowly at the ceiling.

Adrian’s face changed.

Not dramatically.

Softly.

Painfully.

“He has your eyes.”

Evelyn looked at the baby.

“He has his own.”

Adrian nodded.

“I deserved that.”

“No.”

“You deserved worse.”

He took the blow without defense.

That mattered.

Not enough.

But it mattered.

“I was cruel to you,” he said.

Evelyn looked up.

The room went very still.

“I called you not enough because I was terrified the board would see me as the weak link in my own bloodline.”

His voice cracked.

“That is not an excuse.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

“It is not.”

He swallowed.

“I let Celeste make me feel chosen when I should have been protecting the person I chose.”

Evelyn’s eyes burned.

“You didn’t just fail me.”

“I know.”

She looked down at Noah.

“You failed him before you knew him.”

That broke him.

Adrian covered his face.

For a moment, Evelyn saw the man she had loved under all the money, pride, and damage.

Then she remembered the dining table.

The divorce papers.

Celeste in the doorway.

You were never enough.

Love did not erase evidence.

Adrian lowered his hands.

“I want to be his father.”

Evelyn’s voice stayed steady.

“Then start by accepting that you do not get to own him.”

He nodded.

“And you do not get to own me.”

“I know.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

“No.”

May you like

“You are learning.”
