Daniel did not refuse Noah publicly.
That would have made him look cruel.
He refused in paperwork.
That was worse.
The military family-care record showed that when Emma was unconscious, Daniel was contacted as the child’s primary civilian parent.
He was asked to take custody of Noah during Emma’s emergency treatment.
He declined.
Not once.
Three times.
His reason changed each time.
First, he said he was traveling.
Then he said he did not have adequate childcare.
Then he said Emma had “created this situation through reckless service choices.”
The final note in the file was written by a base family-support officer.

Noah was asleep.
Daniel’s face was flat.
Emma understood then.
He was not worried about Noah.

Her tears.
Her wheelchair.
Her medication.
Her nightmares.

When she came home, he had already moved into the guest room.
