PART 7

Amanda confronted Daniel in the hallway during the recess.

Emma did not mean to hear it.

She was near the vending machines with Mara, trying to warm a bottle for Noah while her hands shook from the hearing.

Amanda’s voice came from around the corner.

“You told me she left him.”

Daniel replied too quickly.

“She did.”

“The judge read the record.”

“You don’t understand military paperwork.”

Amanda laughed once.

It sounded bitter.

“No.”

“I understand a father refusing his baby unless his injured wife gave him property.”

Silence.

Then Daniel hissed, “Keep your voice down.”

Emma closed her eyes.

That sentence.

Always the sentence of people who fear witnesses more than wrongdoing.

Amanda said, “Did you marry me because you wanted a mother for Noah or because you wanted someone presentable beside you in court?”

Daniel did not answer fast enough.

Amanda whispered, “Oh my God.”

Mara looked at Emma.

“Do you want to move?”

Emma shook her head.

For once, Daniel could sit in the sound of his own truth.

When the hearing resumed, Amanda did not return to Daniel’s table immediately.

She sat two rows behind him.

That small distance became visible to everyone.

Daniel noticed.

His face tightened.

Judge Watkins ordered additional review.

The custody evaluator would reassess Daniel’s claims.

Daniel’s communications during Emma’s hospitalization would be subpoenaed.

The court would examine whether Daniel attempted to use custody to pressure Emma into financial concessions.

Mara asked for temporary supervised visitation only.

Daniel’s attorney protested.

Judge Watkins looked at Daniel.

“Given today’s record, this court has serious concerns about Mr. Carter’s candor.”

Candor.

A clean courtroom word for lying.

Supervised visitation was ordered.

No disparagement.

No contact outside parenting software.

No access to Emma’s medical providers.

No use of her military disability in custody arguments without court permission.

Daniel looked like each condition was a slap.

Emma felt no triumph.

Only oxygen.

Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.

Daniel tried to walk past them quickly.

Amanda did not follow him.

She stopped near Emma.

Her face was pale.

“I didn’t know.”

Emma looked at her.

“Now you do.”

Amanda nodded once.

Then walked away alone.
