PART 6
Judge Watkins did not read the whole file aloud.
She could not.
Some pages remained protected.
Some names stayed hidden.
Some locations stayed classified.
But enough truth entered the courtroom to destroy Daniel’s story.
The judge began with the mission summary.
Colonel Emma Carter was injured during emergency civilian extraction.
She was not abandoning a child.
She was responding to a lawful military order.
Then the commendation.
Three civilians rescued.
One officer shielded.
Severe injury sustained during second blast.
Then the medical review.
Cognitive function intact.
Parenting capacity not impaired.
Adaptive care plan approved.
Then the family-support log.
Judge Watkins paused before reading that part.
Daniel’s face went gray.
Amanda looked at him.
The judge continued.
Civilian spouse Daniel Carter contacted regarding infant care.
Request declined.
Second request declined.
Third request declined unless service member agreed to resign command and transfer property control.
The courtroom went completely still.
Amanda whispered, “Daniel…”
“What is she talking about?”
Daniel stared at the table.
Emma’s voice came quietly from across the room.
“I never abandoned him.”
She looked at the man who had turned her recovery into a weapon.
“You did.”
Amanda pulled her hand away from Daniel’s arm.
He tried to whisper to her.
She moved farther from him.
Judge Watkins looked furious now, but controlled.
“Mr. Carter, did you refuse temporary care of your son while Colonel Carter was hospitalized?”
Daniel’s attorney stood.
“Your Honor—”
The judge cut him off.
“I asked Mr. Carter.”
Daniel swallowed.
“It was complicated.”
The judge’s voice sharpened.
“Was it false when you testified that Colonel Carter abandoned the child?”
Daniel’s mouth opened.
No answer.
That silence did what confession could not.
Emma lowered her cheek to Noah’s head.
For months, she had carried Daniel’s lie like another injury.
Now the court had seen the wound and named the hand that made it.
Mara stood.
“Your Honor, we ask that custody remain with Colonel Carter and that Mr. Carter’s petition be reviewed for bad faith filings.”
Judge Watkins closed the folder.
“Custody remains with Colonel Carter.”

Applause rose softly behind Emma before the bailiff could stop it.
