The first hearing was humiliating.
Daniel made sure of that.
He arrived early with Amanda beside him and a folder thick enough to look truthful.
He wore a navy suit.
Amanda wore beige.
They looked like stability if stability could be tailored.
Emma arrived in her wheelchair with Noah in her lap and Mara pushing a second chair full of medical files, military accommodation records, and baby supplies.
People looked at Emma.
Some with sympathy.
Some with doubt.
She hated both.
Daniel’s attorney spoke first.
He painted Emma as brave but damaged.
Honorable but unsafe.
A mother deserving visitation, but not custody.
He used the word unstable six times.
Daniel used it again when he testified.
“My concern is my son.”
Emma looked at Noah.
Our son, she thought.
But Daniel always said my when he wanted power.
The attorney asked Daniel why he believed Emma had abandoned the child.
Daniel lowered his eyes with practiced sorrow.
“She left for military duty after he was born.”
“She knew the risks.”
“When she came back injured, everything changed.”
Amanda dabbed her eye with a tissue.
Emma watched her.
For the first time, she wondered how much Amanda actually knew.
Then Daniel said the sentence that changed the room.
“She is too unstable to raise my son.”
Mara’s pen stopped moving.
Judge Watkins looked at Daniel over her glasses.
Emma held Noah tighter.
The baby stirred but did not wake.
Mara stood.
“Your Honor, we renew our motion for review of the sealed military record.”
Daniel’s attorney objected.
“Classified service material is unnecessary and prejudicial.”
Mara turned.
“It is necessary because Mr. Carter has placed the circumstances of Colonel Carter’s service, injury, and alleged abandonment directly at issue.”
Judge Watkins leaned back.
The courtroom held its breath.
Then she said, “I will review the sealed record in chambers.”
Daniel’s face remained calm.
But his fingers tightened around his pen.
Amanda noticed.
So did Emma.
Thirty minutes later, Judge Watkins returned with a sealed folder in her hand.
Her face was not the same.
She sat down slowly.
“This sealed record says otherwise.”
