Chapter 11 - THE LEAK
Daniel limited the Northstar information to four people.
Himself.
Detective Mara Quinn from financial crimes.
The federal investigator assigned to Halcyon.
And the assistant district attorney.
All denied contacting the company.
Daniel created three slightly different versions of the next update and shared one with each person.
Only Mara’s version contained a fictional search of Northstar’s Chicago office.
Within two hours, Northstar’s attorneys filed an emergency objection to the nonexistent search.
Mara Quinn was the leak.
She disappeared before internal affairs reached her home.
Her service weapon remained on the kitchen table. Her police walkie-talkie was gone.
Financial records showed Northstar paying her brother’s medical debt through a charitable foundation.
The pattern matched Robert’s method.
Debt first.
Favor second.
Silence afterward.
Mara had accessed the Carter case after Eli arrived at the station. She reviewed the evidence inventory, hospital location, and watch files.
She was the person who told Rebecca the second archive had been found.
Daniel felt the betrayal personally. Mara had trained younger officers to recognize domestic abuse.
She knew exactly what the evidence meant.
She chose Northstar anyway.
A warrant tracked her vehicle to an abandoned warehouse near Halcyon’s distribution center.
Police found the car but not Mara.
Inside was a copied evidence envelope containing an empty oral syringe.
The syringe resembled one used to administer Eli’s sedative.
Northstar intended to introduce a second syringe with different residue and create confusion over which one came from the house.
But Eli’s original water bottle, toxicology, and Margaret’s confession preserved the chain.
Mara’s interference complicated the case without destroying it.
Hannah visited Halcyon for a board interview under federal supervision.
Several directors expressed sympathy.
Others asked whether her family scandal endangered the company.
She stared at them.
“My father stole employee retirement funds, concealed a patient death, and tried to frame me. The danger is not that people know. The danger is that some of you preferred not to.”
No one challenged her after that.
The board voted to release the full device-failure report and compensate the patient’s family through transparent proceedings.
Hannah recommended an independent monitor oversee the company.
Robert’s legacy began separating from Halcyon’s future.
At the hospital, Eli took three steps with assistance. He asked whether he would have to testify against Ryan and Robert.
“Only in a protected way,” Hannah said.
“Will they see me?”
“Not unless you choose.”
“I want Grandpa to hear the recording.”
“Why?”
“So he knows he didn’t erase me.”
Hannah hugged him carefully around the injured ribs.
Daniel received another anonymous file.
This one showed Mara entering Rebecca Sloan’s office before the assault. Rebecca gave her an envelope and said:
“If the child reaches Reed, delay the ambulance record and control the watch.”
Mara answered:
“I can delay records. I cannot control Reed.”
Rebecca replied:
“Then use his guilt.”
Robert’s compliance book contained Daniel’s vulnerability, but Rebecca had developed a specific strategy.
A forged emergency report was already prepared accusing Daniel of mishandling his brother’s overdose years earlier.
Northstar planned to release it if he continued.
Daniel read the threat.
Then he sent the authentic case record to internal affairs himself.
“My brother died,” he told Hannah. “I made mistakes that night. They don’t own the truth because it hurts.”
His decision removed their leverage.
Minutes later, Mara called the station.
Her voice shook.
“Rebecca has me. She wants Eli’s watch in exchange.”
Then a second voice entered the line.
Rebecca Sloan.

👉 Rebecca had returned to the place where Eli was attacked and was demanding the one object that preserved every version of the truth.
