Chapter 15 - THE FINAL MINUTE

Hannah did not enter Robert’s office alone.

Daniel remained in the stairwell. Federal agents covered every exit. Peter Sloan was in custody, and Northstar’s accounts were frozen.

Rebecca had fewer places to run.

That did not make her less dangerous.

Hannah opened the office door.

Rebecca sat behind Robert’s desk with Eli’s smartwatch beside her. She wore no disguise. For the first time, Hannah saw the woman who had studied her family as a set of weaknesses.

“You could have released the recording without doing any of this,” Hannah said.

Rebecca touched the watch.

“The recording is leverage.”

“It belongs to a child you helped terrorize.”

“It belongs to the person who understands its value.”

Hannah looked directly at her.

“That person is Eli.”

Rebecca’s expression hardened.

She claimed Robert contacted her a year earlier after Hannah began questioning company expenses. He wanted behavioral profiles, not violence.

Then Northstar expanded the assignment.

Ryan’s aggression, Margaret’s fear, Robert’s greed, and Hannah’s loyalty became variables.

Eli was supposed to be manageable.

“He wasn’t,” Hannah said.

“No.”

“You underestimated him.”

“I underestimated what certainty does to a child.”

Rebecca believed memory could be shaped if every authority repeated the same story. Eli’s recordings defeated that theory.

He created an external witness she could not intimidate.

Rebecca played the final minute.

Ryan’s breathing filled the office speakers.

Eli whimpered from the floor.

Robert said, “Put the badge in his hand.”

Margaret answered, “Hannah will know she didn’t do this.”

Then another voice entered the foyer.

A woman.

“Knowing and proving are different things.”

Hannah recognized the voice.

The Halcyon security director, Laura Hayes.

Laura had confirmed the stolen badge access, helped freeze the transfer, and supported Hannah throughout the investigation.

On the recording, Laura continued:

“The board packet is ready. The pension files will point to Hannah. Northstar takes control after the suspension.”

Robert asked, “And if Eli wakes?”

Laura answered:

“Rebecca will handle his memory.”

Hannah felt the last safe structure inside the company collapse.

Laura had not merely leaked the recovery-house address.

She designed the digital evidence from within Halcyon security.

Rebecca smiled.

“She is why your father trusted the system.”

“Where is she?”

“Already leaving the country.”

Daniel entered with his weapon lowered but ready.

Rebecca reached for the watch.

“Don’t,” he warned.

She pressed one button.

Every office door locked.

The building alarms activated.

On the main monitor, Laura Hayes appeared inside a private aircraft hangar. She held a company tablet connected to Halcyon’s retirement server.

Northstar’s frozen transfer had been restored under a different beneficiary.

A trust bearing Eli’s name.

Hannah stared.

“They’re putting the stolen money under my son.”

Rebecca stood.

“When regulators find it, the public sees a mother who used a child’s identity after framing her family.”

“You’re still building the same lie.”

“No,” Rebecca said. “Laura is.”

A gunshot sounded through the monitor.

The image shook.

Laura fell out of frame.

Someone stepped toward the camera and removed the tablet from her hand.

Only a dark sleeve was visible.

Then Robert’s voice came through the live connection.

“Rebecca, you were told not to release the final minute.”

Hannah turned toward the office speakers.

Her father remained inside a county jail under constant observation.

Daniel called the detention center.

The officer on duty answered immediately.

Robert Mercer was still inside his cell.

Yet the voice on the monitor continued.

“Hannah has seen enough to destroy the family. Now let her learn who created it.”

Rebecca’s confidence vanished.

“That isn’t a recording,” she whispered.

The office lights went dark.

Eli’s smartwatch activated by itself.

A new file began uploading—timestamped three minutes in the future.

On the screen, Hannah saw the same office.

She saw herself standing beside Daniel.

She saw Rebecca lying motionless near Robert’s desk.

Then the office door opened in the video.

A man entered wearing Robert’s company ring.

His face remained hidden.

The live door handle behind Hannah slowly began to turn.
