Chapter 12 - THE EMPTY HOUSE
Daniel refused to bring the original watch.
Technicians created a duplicate containing a tracking device and partial files. The authentic watch remained inside a federal evidence vault.
Hannah insisted on joining the operation.
“No,” Daniel said.
“She studied me. She will know if I’m not involved.”
“She may be using that expectation.”
“She has Mara, and she wants me frightened enough to make a mistake.”
Daniel looked toward Eli’s hospital room.
“You stay outside the perimeter.”
Hannah agreed because arguing would delay the rescue.
The Carter house stood dark beneath steady rain. Police cut power to the surrounding block and approached through neighboring yards.
Daniel entered carrying the duplicate watch.
The foyer still held faint marks where Eli’s body had lain. Hannah watched through a command-screen feed from an armored vehicle.
A phone rang inside the living room.
Daniel answered.
Rebecca’s voice came through a hidden speaker.
“Place the watch beside the coffee cup.”
Margaret’s cup remained on the table as though the night had frozen around it.
Daniel placed the duplicate beside it.
“Where is Mara?”
“Upstairs.”
Officers searched silently.
The rooms were empty.
Then the company badge reader beside Robert’s home office lit up.
Hannah’s stolen credentials opened the door remotely.
Inside, a monitor displayed Mara tied to a chair in another location.
Rebecca had never been in the house.
She was using the familiar setting to control the operation.
Daniel lifted the watch.
“Release her.”
Rebecca laughed.
“That device taught Eli to trust machines over adults. I want to see whether you made the same mistake.”
The duplicate transmitted its location.
Rebecca recognized the signal immediately.
“You brought a copy.”
The video of Mara changed.
A countdown appeared beside her chair.
Hannah studied the background. Concrete wall. Red emergency cabinet. A faint Halcyon logo on a pipe.
“She’s at the old testing warehouse,” Hannah told the command team.
The warehouse where the defective monitor had been evaluated before shipment.
Police redeployed.
Daniel kept Rebecca talking.
“Why help Northstar?”
“I helped Robert manage risk. Northstar paid better.”
“You conditioned a child.”
“I measured resistance.”
“You planned his assault.”
“I predicted it.”
“You told Robert how to use it.”
Rebecca’s calm faltered.
“Ryan made his choice.”
“And you designed the room in which he would make it.”
She disconnected.
Tactical officers entered the warehouse before the countdown ended. Mara was found alive, drugged but conscious.
Rebecca escaped through a loading tunnel.
The tunnel led to the company parking lot, where a dark SUV waited.
Security footage showed the vehicle leaving three minutes before police arrived.
The driver’s face remained hidden.
But the passenger wore Robert’s company ring.
Robert was still in custody.
Someone else had received an identical ring.
Halcyon’s old corporate photographs showed only one other person wearing it.
Company cofounder Charles Mercer—Hannah’s godfather and Robert’s closest friend.
Charles had supposedly retired in Arizona five years earlier.
