Chapter 13 - THE GODFATHER’S ACCOUNT
Charles Mercer answered Hannah’s call from a hotel near the state line.
He denied helping Rebecca.
“I haven’t seen her in years.”
“Your SUV collected her.”
“My company sold that vehicle after I retired.”
“You approved Northstar’s investment.”
“I introduced them to Robert. That is all.”
Hannah remembered Charles attending birthdays, graduations, and Eli’s baptism. He taught her to read company balance sheets before she entered college.
When Robert became harsh, Charles often softened his decisions.
Now Hannah wondered whether kindness had simply made him harder to question.
Federal agents detained him before he reached the airport.
His luggage contained no ring.
But his phone held encrypted messages from Rebecca.
One read:
Reed rejected pressure. Move to Mercer extraction.
Charles claimed the message referred to Robert Mercer, not him.
Then investigators found a hidden Northstar account in Charles’s name.
He received two million dollars after Halcyon’s device failure.
Charles finally admitted that he introduced Northstar to Robert during a liquidity crisis. He believed the fund would protect the company.
Northstar instead demanded influence over contracts, board appointments, and emergency financing.
When the patient died, Charles recommended disclosure.
Robert refused.
Charles left the company but continued accepting payments in exchange for silence.
“Did you order Rebecca to target my family?” Hannah asked through the interview glass.
“No.”
“Did you know she was studying Eli?”
“No.”
“Did you know Northstar wanted my father to remove me?”
“I knew they considered you an obstacle.”
“And you said nothing.”
Charles looked toward the floor.
“I thought Robert would never harm his grandson.”
Hannah felt exhausted by adults whose morality ended at what they imagined others would never do.
Charles gave investigators access to Northstar’s secure portal.
The company’s internal records confirmed the acquisition strategy.
Drive Halcyon into a public pension scandal.
Remove Hannah, the only executive with credibility to stabilize the company.
Force Robert to sell voting shares under emergency terms.
Northstar did not need Eli dead.
It needed Hannah blamed and Robert desperate.
Rebecca expanded the plan beyond Northstar’s written instructions, but the fund continued financing her after learning violence had occurred.
The portal contained a message sent after Eli’s hospitalization:
Child survival creates evidentiary risk. Prioritize watch recovery.
Northstar’s executives were no longer distant investors.
They were participating in obstruction.
Federal warrants followed.
The fund froze accounts and denied wrongdoing.
Rebecca remained missing.
Mara began cooperating after her rescue. She admitted leaking records and attempting to replace evidence. She also revealed Rebecca had another target.
Eli’s smartwatch was not the only device recording that night.
Robert installed cameras throughout the house to monitor Hannah.
The home security server automatically backed up to Halcyon’s private cloud.
Rebecca deleted the visible recordings but could not access one offline archive stored at Charles’s former office.
Charles claimed the archive no longer existed.
Police searched the office.
A fire had destroyed most of the records two weeks earlier.
Inside a melted safe, technicians recovered one damaged drive.
The first restored frame showed Ryan striking Eli.
The second showed Robert holding Hannah’s badge.
The third showed someone standing in the hallway behind Margaret.
A police officer.
Not Mara.
Officer Daniel Reed.
Hannah stared at the image.
Daniel was beside her when technicians opened the file.
“That isn’t me,” he said.
The face was his.
