Chapter 10 - The Key Daniel Brought HomeHospital administrators canceled the false procedure order and transferred Elena to a protected floor under a different name.

Only a small medical team knew her location.

Daniel remained with her.

Detective Grant placed officers at every entrance, but no one trusted digital security anymore. Records were printed. Instructions were confirmed face-to-face. Every medication bottle was opened in front of Elena and checked by two separate clinicians.

Lily remained stable.

The due date was still nearly eight weeks away.

Michael’s attempt to schedule an early birth proved he was losing patience.

Nora, Elizabeth, and Vivian had disappeared from every known location.

The live feed from the Continuity Vault ended before investigators traced it.

Michael’s location remained unknown.

Daniel returned briefly to the family home under police escort to retrieve clothing and the hidden nursery files.

The house looked unchanged from the night he arrived with roses.

The kitchen island had been cleaned.

The cloudy glass was gone.

The flowers had been removed.

Yet he could still see Vivian standing near the sink and Elena protecting her stomach.

Upstairs, the nursery door remained sealed with evidence tape.

Detective Grant authorized him to enter after technicians completed their work.

Daniel held the brass nursery key.

He had purchased it from the contractor along with the redesigned lock. He assumed it opened only one door and the hidden closet panel.

Now he noticed a third set of scratches beneath the rocking chair.

He moved the chair aside.

A small brass plate had been embedded in the floor.

The nursery key fit perfectly.

When Daniel turned it, the center section of the floor rose less than an inch.

Beneath it was a waterproof case he had never seen.

Grant opened it while recording.

Inside were three objects.

The tiny blue blanket Elena arrived with at the adoption agency.

A microfilm archive.

And a recent photograph of Nora holding the same knitted baby cap Daniel purchased at the airport.

Daniel stared at it.

“That cap came from a stranger.”

The woman knitting at the airport had not been random.

She must have been Nora.

The muddy cap recovered from the floor had been switched. The one inside the case appeared identical but carried a narrow metal strip woven beneath the yarn.

A data key.

Daniel had unknowingly brought it into the house while Vivian attempted to drug Elena.

Nora engineered his early flight, placed the key in his hands, and entered the service passage before him.

She needed the kitchen recording.

She also needed Daniel to carry something Vivian would never suspect.

The microfilm contained old trial documents. One page identified Elena’s biological father.

Dr. Thomas Grant.

Detective Leah Grant stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at her.

“That is your surname.”

Leah stared at the document.

“Thomas Grant was my father.”

Elena’s biological father had been Detective Grant’s father, making Leah Elena’s half-sister.

Grant stepped away from the case.

“My father died when I was fourteen.”

“Was his body recovered?” Daniel asked.

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Then opened them.

“At least, we were told it was his.”

The nursery monitor turned on by itself.

Static filled the screen.

Michael Mercer appeared live.

Behind him stood Nora.

She was not restrained now.

Elizabeth stood on the other side.

Vivian sat farther back, watching silently.

They were together.

Not necessarily willingly.

But no longer in separate rooms.

Michael smiled.

“You found the key.”

Daniel held the knitted cap.

“What does it open?”

“The real Continuity Vault.”

“The chamber beneath the retreat?”

“A decoy.”

Detective Grant raised her weapon toward the monitor as though the gesture could reach him.

Michael looked directly at her.

“Hello, Leah. Your father regretted leaving you.”

Her hand began shaking.

“Where is he?”

“Closer than you think.”

A knock sounded from downstairs.

Every officer inside the house went still.

The doorbell camera displayed an elderly man wearing a dark physician’s coat.

A scar crossed his forehead.

Detective Grant stared at the screen.

Her face lost all color.

“My father.”

Thomas Grant had supposedly been dead for twenty-five years.

He held no weapon.

Only an old leather medical bag and a folded document.

Daniel activated the intercom.

“Step away from the door.”

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

“There is no time. Michael has lied about Lily’s marker.”

“What does it do?”

“It is not a cure.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Then what is it?”

Thomas looked over one shoulder toward the dark street.

“The baby is not the final subject. Elena is.”

Upstairs, Michael’s live feed flickered.

Nora suddenly shouted:

“Do not let Thomas inside!”

The front-door lock disengaged by itself.

Thomas stepped into the foyer.

Detective Grant aimed her weapon toward the stairs.

Daniel moved between the nursery and the hallway, still holding the knitted cap containing Nora’s key.

Then Elena’s voice came through his phone from the protected hospital floor.

She was crying.

“Daniel, someone is in my room.”

A man spoke behind her.

Calm.

Familiar.

The voice belonged to Dr. Raymond Ellis.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “Michael was never waiting for Lily to be born.”

The call ended.

At the same instant, the hidden floor compartment began transmitting coordinates to an unknown location.

Thomas Grant looked up the stairs.

“If they move Elena tonight, you will never find either of them again.”

Daniel stared at the father who had returned from the dead, the detective whose family was now tied to his wife, and the monitor where Michael watched everything unfold.

Then the nursery door slammed shut behind him.

The brass key turned from the other side.
