Chapter 9 - The Room Beneath the RetreatDaniel and Elena stopped sharing the same hospital recovery apartment until genetic testing could clarify their relationship.

The decision was practical.
It felt devastating.
Daniel slept in the living room.
Elena remained behind a closed bedroom door with Lily’s heartbeat monitor beside her.
They spoke through lawyers, doctors, and sometimes text messages even though only twenty feet separated them.
Neither believed their love had been knowingly wrong.
Neither could ignore the possibility created by the birth certificate.
Expedited testing compared Daniel’s DNA, Elena’s archived prenatal sample, and genetic material preserved from Michael Mercer’s old medical records.
The result showed no half-sibling relationship.
Michael was not Elena’s biological father.
Relief arrived so powerfully that Elena cried against Daniel’s chest for several minutes.
Yet the test created a new mystery.
Elena shared a significant genetic connection with Elizabeth Mercer.
Not as sisters.
As aunt and niece.
Elizabeth’s biological mother and Elena’s unknown father were likely siblings.
The Mercer research had not randomly selected Elena.
Her biological family carried the missing portion of the marker through another branch.
Nora’s note was accurate.
Michael forged paternity to claim legal authority over Elena’s records.
The identity of Elena’s real father remained sealed somewhere inside the Continuity Vault.
Federal agents explored the underground rooms beneath the abandoned retreat.
They found preserved patient files, obsolete laboratory equipment, and a locked steel chamber requiring two biological confirmations.
One from the Mercer line.
One from Elena’s line.
Lily might provide both.
The chamber’s outer panel identified it as the Continuity Vault.
Michael had built it to preserve data, patents, and biological samples from the original trials.
No one could open it without risking automatic destruction of the archive.
Daniel refused to provide his DNA.
Elena refused to permit any use of Lily’s.
Then a live monitor activated inside the chamber.
Michael Mercer appeared on the screen.
He had aged dramatically since the hidden photograph, but Daniel recognized him instantly.
The same posture.
The same controlled eyes.
The same scar near his chin.
“Hello, Daniel.”
Daniel stepped toward the camera.
“Where are you?”
“Close enough to know Elena survived Vivian.”
“You watched it.”
“Nora arranged the recording.”
“You allowed my mother to drug my wife.”
“I ordered Vivian to preserve the child.”
“That is not an answer.”
Michael smiled faintly.
“You always believed morality was a sentence said at the correct volume.”
Daniel nearly struck the monitor.
Elena moved beside him.
“What is inside the vault?”
Michael looked directly at her.
“Proof that the Mercer trial succeeded.”
“You used pregnant women.”
“I attempted to prevent inherited metabolic disease.”
“You hid complications.”
“Because investors and regulators would have destroyed the project before we corrected them.”
“And Elizabeth?”
Michael’s expression changed.
“My first success and greatest failure.”
Elizabeth carried one half of the desired marker but developed severe neurological episodes. Elena’s biological family carried the stabilizing variation.
Michael selected Elena because a child between her and Daniel might inherit the complete version.
Lily was not guaranteed to possess it.
But prenatal samples suggested she did.
“What does that mean for her?” Elena asked.
“It may mean she is immune to a class of inherited diseases.”
“May?”
“It may also mean the marker can be reproduced from her stem cells.”
Daniel’s voice became cold.
“You arranged our marriage to manufacture a patent.”
“I arranged an introduction. You chose everything after.”
“You watched us.”
“I protected the outcome.”
Michael insisted he did not want custody of Lily. He wanted one blood sample after birth and access to the vault.
Elena refused.
Michael’s calmness remained.
“Nora will tell you refusal protects Lily. Elizabeth will tell you birth itself is dangerous. Vivian will offer control. Each woman has lied.”
“And you haven’t?” Daniel asked.
“I have lied more skillfully.”
The admission chilled everyone.
The monitor showed another room.
Nora sat restrained in a chair.
Her face resembled Elena’s around the eyes.
Alive.
Beside her stood Elizabeth Mercer.
The two women were not allies.
Elizabeth held Vivian’s black-icon phone.
“I have your mother,” Michael said. “Elizabeth has mine.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Vivian?”
The camera shifted again.
Vivian sat inside another room, no longer in custody clothing. Someone had removed her from detention or replaced her before transfer.
Authorities had not yet discovered the escape.
Michael continued:
“The family is finally assembled.”
Elena gripped Daniel’s hand.
“You will never touch Lily.”
Michael looked toward her stomach.
“The choice may not remain yours.”
The hospital monitor attached to Elena suddenly sounded an alert. Not medical distress—a remote-access warning.
Someone had attempted to enter her prenatal records from inside the hospital.
The user carried Michael Mercer’s executive credentials.

And the access request scheduled an induction procedure for the following morning.
👉 Michael had reached into Elena’s hospital records from hiding, proving he could attempt to control Lily’s birth without ever entering the room.
