Daniel had believed he stood alone in the dark living room while recording Vivian.
The photograph proved another person was behind him or across the room.
Detective Grant returned to the house with a forensic team.
They examined every entrance, window, and interior camera.
No unknown fingerprints appeared.
The intruder had prepared carefully.
A narrow service passage ran behind the living-room wall, originally designed for heating access. Renovations had concealed it beneath paneling, but someone reopened it from the basement.
From inside the passage, a person could observe the kitchen through a ventilation grille.
They could also photograph Daniel at the entrance without being seen.
A black thread caught on one exposed nail.
The fabric matched the clothing Elizabeth wore in the recovered laboratory video.
Daniel imagined his hidden sister standing inside his wall while Vivian threatened Elena.
“Why didn’t she stop it?” he asked.
Grant answered carefully.
“She may have wanted the attempt documented.”
“Or completed.”
The service passage led to the nursery.
Behind the crib wall, investigators found a second compartment containing Elena’s wiped phone.
The device had not been destroyed.
It had been copied and returned.
Technicians recovered fragments of deleted messages Vivian never saw.
Several came from a contact using the name Nora.
Elena sat beside Daniel as the messages appeared.
Do not trust Mercer doctors.
The tablets are different because Vivian is replacing them.
Pretend not to notice until Daniel returns.
If you confront her too early, Elizabeth will change the plan.
Elena gripped the table.
“My mother was warning me.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Daniel asked.
“I didn’t know who Nora was. I thought it was someone trying to frighten me.”
The messages included details no stranger should know: the song Elena’s adoptive mother sang at bedtime, the blue blanket she arrived with as an infant, and the small crescent-shaped scar beneath her left arm.
Nora Vale was almost certainly alive.
The final recovered message had been sent minutes before Daniel entered the house.
He is outside. Keep Vivian talking. The recording must capture the glass.
Elena looked at him.
“Nora knew you came home.”
“She may have changed my flight.”
Daniel’s business meeting in Seattle ended early after an anonymous buyer canceled. The airline app then offered him an unexpected seat on the only remaining flight home.
Someone engineered his return.
The entire kitchen confrontation may have been staged to expose Vivian publicly and preserve evidence.
Vivian still chose every act.
But someone selected the moment.
Another recovered file contained an audio recording made through Elena’s phone while it was hidden in Vivian’s pocket.
Vivian spoke to someone in the dark living room before Daniel arrived.
“You said Daniel would not return until Thursday.”
A woman answered.
“Plans changed.”
“You promised I would have time to establish incapacity.”
“You became careless.”
“Elizabeth?”
The woman laughed softly.
“You still cannot tell us apart.”
Vivian’s breathing changed.
“Nora.”
Elena paused the recording.
Her biological mother had been inside the house.
Nora continued:
“Daniel needs to see what you are.”
“And Elena?”
“She needs to survive you.”
“What about the child?”
A long silence followed.
Then Nora said:
“Lily must be born. Michael is wrong about what she will unlock.”
Vivian whispered:
“And Elizabeth?”
“Elizabeth believes death is kinder.”
The recording captured the front-door latch moving.
Nora retreated into the service passage seconds before Daniel entered.
She watched him record the kitchen.
She left Elena’s copied phone behind the nursery wall.
She wanted Vivian exposed.
But she also wanted Lily born for reasons she had not revealed.
The three older adults surrounding the pregnancy had separate goals.
Michael wanted the Continuity Vault.
Elizabeth wanted to prevent Lily’s birth.
Nora wanted Lily alive but hidden from Michael.
Vivian wanted guardianship and control.
Daniel and Elena were the only people discussing what they wanted for their own child.
The recovered phone contained one location file.
A route from the family home to the Vermont estate, then north toward the Canadian border.
The final destination was an abandoned women’s medical retreat once funded by Mercer Biodyne.
Agents searching the property found underground rooms and sealed patient archives.
One file held Elena’s original birth certificate.
Mother: Nora Vale.
Father: Michael Mercer.
Daniel stared at the document.
Elena read it twice.
Then stepped away from him.
If the certificate was genuine, Michael Mercer was her biological father.
That would make Daniel and Elena half-siblings.
Their marriage.
Their unborn child.
Everything changed in a single line.
Daniel’s face emptied.
“This has to be forged.”
Elena placed both hands over Lily.
The archived DNA page attached to the certificate carried Michael’s authenticated signature.
But the actual genetic results were missing.
In the next room, agents found a note written by Nora:

Michael created the birth certificate to claim Elena. He is not her father. The real father is the one person Daniel must never find.
