Elena had not originally been invited.

The sponsorship came from a Mercer subsidiary Daniel had never heard of.
Daniel’s seat was changed that evening.

Their coincidence had been engineered.

Even Elena’s obstetrician belonged to a medical network partly funded by the Mercer Foundation.
Someone had placed their entire marriage inside systems controlled by Daniel’s family.
Detective Grant traced the trust amendment to a law office in Delaware. The filing required Michael Mercer’s biometric authorization.
The verification was genuine.
Michael was alive six years earlier.
The attached photograph of Elena came from a private investigator named Nicholas Vane.
Vane had died in a car accident two years ago.
His files disappeared after his death.
Elena examined the old photograph of herself leaving the university building.
She remembered the day.
She had been working on a research project involving archived prenatal drug trials. Her task was administrative: contacting families whose records had been sealed decades earlier and offering access to updated health information.
One file carried the name Mercer Biodyne.
“My supervisor told me the company no longer existed.”
“What was the study?” Daniel asked.
“A pregnancy-support medication tested in the early nineties. The project was abandoned.”
“Why?”
“Records suggested children born during the trial developed a rare metabolic marker.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Were you part of it?”
“I was born in 1993.”
Elena had been adopted as an infant. Her birth records were incomplete, and the agency handling the adoption closed years later.
She never knew her biological parents.
The university project may have led Michael Mercer to her.
Samuel Price obtained the sealed trust annex.
It contained a reference to Subject E-17.
The subject’s date of birth matched Elena’s.
Michael’s amendment described her as “the only verified surviving maternal line capable of completing the Mercer continuity protocol.”
Elena read the phrase twice.
“I’m not a maternal line. I’m a person.”
Daniel turned toward Samuel.
“What is the continuity protocol?”
“I have never seen it.”
“Then find someone who has.”
The university denied Daniel access to the original trial records without a court order. Detective Grant obtained one after presenting evidence of surveillance and medication tampering.
Most files were missing.
One surviving report listed the principal research physician.
Dr. Michael Mercer.
Daniel’s father had led the project before founding Mercer Biodyne.
Elena’s birth mother was identified only by initials:
N.V.
A technician recovered deleted correspondence from the university archive. One message, written by Michael, stated:
The infant must be placed outside the company’s reach. Vivian cannot learn which child survived.
Vivian had not always known Elena’s identity.
Michael found her first.
He arranged Daniel’s meeting with her.
Then, when Elena became pregnant, he informed Vivian because he needed her access to the family home and medical network.
But why order Vivian not to harm the baby while allowing Elena to be drugged?
Daniel sought answers from the one person in custody who might provide them.
Vivian agreed to speak only if Daniel came without Elena.
He refused.
The interview took place through glass at the county detention facility.
Vivian looked immaculate despite the plain clothing issued to her. Her gray hair was smooth. Her voice remained controlled.
“You finally opened the nursery wall.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You installed it.”
“Your father did.”
“Where is he?”
“If I knew, I would have left years ago.”
“You spoke to him.”
“He contacted me.”
“You followed his instructions.”
Vivian looked toward Elena’s pregnant stomach through the glass.
“At first.”
Elena leaned toward the microphone.
“You changed my medication.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to make me look incapable.”
“Yes.”
The direct answers were more disturbing than denial.
“Why?”
“Because your child will inherit something more dangerous than money.”
Daniel asked again.
“Where is my father?”
Vivian’s expression changed.
“You still imagine Michael chose Elena so you could build a family. He chose her because he needed the child.”
“For what?”
Vivian placed both hands on the table.
“To replace the one he lost.”
Elena went still.
“What child?”
Vivian looked directly at Daniel.
“The daughter your father had before you.”
Daniel had never been told he had a sister.
