Chapter 13 - the warning Owen sent
Owen remembered the package.
He sat in county custody with his attorney.
“I sent it.”
“Why Michael?” Lena asked.
“Because Rachel wouldn’t listen to me.”
“You knew her?”
“Through Derek.”
“How long?”
“Three years.”
That predated the marriage.
Owen worked with Derek when Derek first began pursuing Rachel.
At the time, Derek spoke openly about Eleanor encouraging the relationship.
Owen thought it was ordinary matchmaking.
Then he saw Rachel’s surname.
Bennett.
He recognized Thomas from old Guardian Atlantic documents.
He began researching.
“That’s when I realized Derek’s mother had targeted Rachel’s family before.”
“Did you tell Derek?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“That the past was irrelevant.”
“Did he know the childhood fire was deliberate?”
“No.”
“Did he know Eleanor had a history with Thomas?”
“Yes.”
Rachel absorbed that.
Derek knew enough to understand his mother had a reason to want him close to her.
He kept dating anyway.
“Did you warn Rachel?” Lena asked.
“Indirectly.”
“How?”
“I told her to ask Derek about Blue Lantern.”
Rachel remembered.
A contractor at a barbecue once made a strange comment.
Ask your boyfriend who really owns his company.
She had laughed.
Derek told her Owen was bitter over money.
Owen had tried again through Michael.
Packet intercepted.
Then through Thomas.
Thomas told him to stop endangering Rachel.

And one photograph nobody had seen.
Derek with Eleanor and Rachel’s father Thomas at a restaurant.

Two months before Rachel met Derek.
Rachel stared.
“Dad.”
Thomas looked devastated.
“I can explain.”
He had met Derek before Rachel did.
Why?
Eleanor requested a conversation.
She claimed she wanted peace after decades of hostility.
She brought Derek.
Thomas thought she was introducing her son as a symbolic gesture.
Then two months later Rachel independently met him.
Or appeared to.
“Did you tell Rachel?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I thought it was coincidence.”
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“After everything you knew about Eleanor?”
“I wanted it to be.”
That was the problem.
People repeatedly chose the comforting explanation.
Eleanor depended on that.
The charity fundraiser where Rachel and Derek met had been organized by Blue Lantern affiliates.
Guest list altered two days before.
Rachel’s invitation moved to a table beside Derek.
Not coincidence.
Eleanor arranged proximity.
Did Derek know?
He admitted:
“My mother told me Rachel would be there.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
“Did she tell you to date me?”
“She said meet you.”
“And then?”
“I liked you.”
“Did you report back?”
“Yes.”
Every answer hurt.
The relationship may have contained real affection.
Its beginning was engineered.
Owen’s original packet proved that.
Michael felt guilt he did not deserve rationally.
But emotionally, he did.
“If I’d gotten it…”
Rachel interrupted.
“You didn’t.”
“I should’ve known.”
“How?”
He looked at Emily across the protected family room.
“I’m her father.”
Rachel understood the impulse.
She did not allow it to become self-punishment.
“You came when someone called.”
Michael looked at her.
“That matters.”
It did.
Mrs. Harris called.
Michael came.
No hesitation.
No narrative.
No paperwork.
Just action.
The case against Eleanor, Derek, Paul, Jonathan-like? Wait no Jonathan not here. We have Paul, Derek, Eleanor, Marsh, maybe Thomas. Keep.
Blue Lantern assets were frozen.
Guardian Atlantic suspended Paul.
Federal prosecutors took over major fraud charges.
Derek faced child endangerment, unlawful confinement, fraud conspiracy, evidence tampering.
Eleanor faced conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, and old-case investigation.
Vanessa cooperated.
Owen faced his own charges for unlawful restraint and prior fraud participation but gained consideration for evidence.
Rachel began rebuilding life.
Then one unresolved question returned.
Where was the person who took Rachel from Vanessa’s motel?
They had assumed Owen.
Rachel said Owen arrived later.
“He didn’t take me from the room.”
Michael stared.
“What?”
“I woke in the van. Owen was driving.”
“So he took you.”
“He said someone left me inside it for him.”
Owen confirmed.
He received a message:
PACKAGE SAFE. MOVE NOW.
Someone abducted Rachel, placed her in Owen’s van, and alerted him.
Who?
Owen thought it was Agent Marcus Reed.
Marcus denied it.
Phone records showed Marcus was in Washington.
Then motel camera enhancement revealed the abductor’s wrist.
A watch.
Police issue.
Not sheriff.
State investigator.
Badge clip hidden under contractor coveralls.
Lena searched cross-agency personnel connected to the old insurance cases.
One name:
Daniel Frost.
Virginia Bureau of Insurance investigator.
He had worked with Thomas Bennett decades earlier.
Retired two years ago.
Current status:
Missing for three months.
Rachel stared.
Another missing investigator.
Had he been helping?
Or controlling?
Then Owen revealed a final secret.
“Daniel Frost is the person who told me Eleanor existed above Paul.”
“Where did he get the information?”
“He said he helped Thomas build the first investigation.”
Thomas went pale.
“Daniel?”
Rachel looked at her father.
“You know him.”
Thomas whispered:
“He died.”
Records said otherwise.
Thomas had been told Daniel Frost died in a car accident twenty-seven years earlier.
Yet state employment showed a man with the same name, same birth date, later career.
Identity reused?
