Chapter 4 - the father Rachel stopped trusting
Thomas Bennett arrived at the sheriff’s office voluntarily.
Sixty-eight.
Retired insurance executive.
Grandfather who sent Emily birthday cards every year.
Michael had known him for fifteen years.
He had never seen him look afraid.
Detective Brooks placed Owen Pierce’s photograph on the table.
“You knew him.”
Thomas did not answer.
“Rachel recorded that he went to Derek’s house to meet you.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Michael watched behind the glass.
“What were you meeting about?” Lena asked.
“Insurance fraud.”
“You discovered Derek’s scheme?”
“No.”
“Owen did.”
Thomas explained.
Before retirement, he had worked for Guardian Atlantic Insurance.
Derek’s company submitted dozens of claims through Guardian.
Owen became suspicious after Derek instructed crews to exaggerate damage.
He contacted Thomas because someone told him Rachel’s father used to work in fraud investigation.
Thomas agreed to meet privately.
“Why Derek’s house?”
“Owen insisted.”
“Why?”
“He said the records were there.”
“What happened?”
Thomas looked down.
“When I arrived, Owen was already injured.”
“By whom?”
“I don’t know.”
“Derek?”
“He said they fought.”
“About?”
“Money.”
“Where was Vanessa?”
“She arrived later.”
“What did you do?”
“I told them to call an ambulance.”
“They did.”
“Yes.”
That explained Owen’s hospital visit.
But not the later blood in the kitchen.
“What happened after the hospital?”
“Owen called me two days later.”
“What did he say?”
“He had proof the insurance scheme was bigger than Derek.”
“Who else?”
Thomas hesitated.
“A claims supervisor inside Guardian.”
Lena leaned forward.
“Name.”
“Paul Mercer.”
Michael knew him too.
Paul had attended Rachel and Michael’s wedding years ago as a colleague of Thomas.
Now senior regional claims director.
If Derek inflated claims, Paul could approve them.
“Did Rachel know?”
“Eventually.”
“Why did Owen return to Derek’s house?”
Thomas looked confused.
“He didn’t tell me he would.”
But surveillance records indicated Owen’s phone connected to a tower near the property on the night he disappeared.
Rachel’s files showed a payment from Paul Mercer to an account connected to Derek.
The conspiracy expanded.
Derek produced false claims.
Paul approved them.
Money moved through contractors.
Owen threatened exposure.
But why hide evidence of Owen at the house?
Thomas admitted another secret.
After Owen disappeared, Paul contacted him.
“He told me Owen stole money and fled.”
“You believed him?”
“No.”
“Then why stay quiet?”
Thomas’s eyes filled.
“Because he threatened Rachel.”
Michael clenched his jaw behind the glass.
“With what?”
“Her custody case.”
After Michael and Rachel divorced, the first year had been bitter.
Both eventually stabilized.
But Paul knew private details because Thomas had confided in him.
He claimed he could produce evidence making Rachel look financially unstable and jeopardize custody.
Thomas became afraid.
“So you protected your daughter by staying silent about a missing man?” Lena asked.
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Michael understood fear.
He did not forgive the choice.
Rachel eventually became suspicious of her father’s evasiveness.
Her microSD card contained messages.
Rachel:
Dad, tell me what happened to Owen.
Thomas:
Drop this.
Rachel:
That’s not an answer.
Thomas:
You have Emily to think about.
Rachel:
That’s exactly why I’m not dropping it.
The last message came six days before Rachel vanished.
Rachel:
I know about Paul.
Thomas never replied.
So Rachel had uncovered the inside insurer.
Where was Paul now?
At work.
Apparently.
Detectives arrived at Guardian Atlantic.
Paul Mercer had left the office early.
His assistant said he received a call, packed his laptop, and left.
Security showed him entering a black SUV.
Registered to Derek Shaw.
Derek had picked him up.
They were together.
A statewide alert went out.
Then hospital records provided another surprise.
Vanessa Shaw—the dark-haired woman in Derek’s kitchen—had not merely treated Owen at St. Catherine’s.
She had filed an internal complaint that night.
The complaint accused someone of pressuring her to alter Owen’s medical chart.
The accused person:
Paul Mercer.
Why would an insurance executive be inside the hospital?
Because he came personally.
Hospital camera archive showed Paul entering Owen’s room at 2:18 a.m.
Derek followed.
Vanessa remained outside.
At 2:31, Owen’s monitor alarmed.
He survived.
But his medical record was altered afterward to minimize the severity of his injury.
Vanessa reported it.
The report disappeared.
Someone suppressed it.
Rachel’s father had assumed Vanessa helped Derek cover up Owen’s case.
The evidence suggested she may have tried to expose it.
Michael stared at the image of Vanessa beside Derek’s missing-car footage.
“Then why was she at the house when Rachel disappeared?”
Lena answered:
“Maybe she wasn’t there to help Derek.”
Minutes later, Vanessa called 911.
Her voice was shaking.
“I have Rachel Bennett.”
Detective Brooks stood.
“Where?”
Vanessa whispered:
“She’s alive.”
Then a man shouted in the background.
