Chapter 2 - the room behind the kitchen

Deputy Aaron Blake ordered Michael away from the house.
Michael hated every second of it.
“My ex-wife may be in there.”
“And your daughter is injured.”
“I can help.”
“You can help by staying with her.”
Michael looked at Emily.
Aaron was right.
He carried her toward the ambulance.
Mrs. Harris remained close.
Two deputies approached the house.
“Sheriff’s office!”
No response.
They entered through the unlocked back door.
Michael watched every window.
Nothing moved.
Five minutes later, Aaron returned.
“No one inside.”
Michael frowned.
“I saw someone.”
“So did Mrs. Harris.”
“Then where did they go?”
“We’re searching.”
Emily tugged his shirt.
“There’s another door.”
Aaron crouched.
“What door?”
“In the kitchen.”
“What kind?”
“The fake wall.”
Michael stared.
He had been inside Rachel’s house dozens of times during custody exchanges.
He had never seen a hidden room.
Emily pointed toward the rear of the house.
“Behind the tall cabinet.”
Deputies returned inside.
The cabinet concealed a narrow panel.
Behind it was a staircase descending into a windowless storage room.
Michael was not permitted near it.
He learned what they found later.
A folding cot.
Bottled water.
A portable monitor.
Two laptops.
Three prepaid phones.
Boxes of paperwork.
A surveillance system showing live feeds from cameras around the property.
One feed covered the backyard cage.
Another covered the pool.
Another showed the street.
Derek had known when Michael arrived.
He had watched him free Emily.
But Derek himself was nowhere inside.
The hidden room had a second exit.
A crawlspace tunnel leading beneath the attached garage.
The garage side door stood open.
Whoever had been in the house had escaped while Michael was watching the back door.
Detective Lena Brooks arrived shortly afterward.
She spoke with Emily only after a child advocate joined them.
“What happened today?”
Emily looked at Michael.
“You can tell her.”
Emily swallowed.
“Derek got mad at Mom.”
“When?”
“Yesterday night.”
“What were they arguing about?”
“Money.”
That did not surprise Michael.
Rachel handled finances for Derek’s property restoration company.
“What happened?”
“Mom said she found fake bills.”
“Did she explain?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“Derek said she was ruining everything.”
Emily twisted the sleeve of her hoodie.
“Mom told me to go upstairs.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“What did you hear?”
“A crash.”
Michael’s stomach tightened.
“Then Mom screamed.”
Emily began crying.
Michael moved toward her, but the advocate gently reminded him to allow her to continue in her own time.
Emily whispered:
“I came downstairs.”
“What did you see?”
“Derek was dragging black bags outside.”
“Did you see your mother?”
“No.”
“Did you see blood?”
Emily shook her head.
“Did you see what was inside the bags?”
“One opened.”
Everyone became still.
“What was inside?”
“Mom’s purse.”
“And?”
“Her laptop.”
“And?”
“Papers.”
Michael exhaled slightly.
Not a body.
At least not that bag.
Then Emily said:
“There was another bag already in the pool.”
“How many?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did Derek put you in the cage?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“He said I saw too much.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“What happened after that?”
“Mrs. Harris came outside.”
The neighbor.
Emily had screamed through the tarp when she heard Mrs. Harris calling her cat.
Mrs. Harris did not understand the words but heard a child crying.
She contacted Michael because Rachel had once given her his number for emergencies.
Derek apparently left the yard before Michael arrived.
“Did anyone else come?”
Emily nodded.
“A woman.”
Michael looked sharply at her.
“What woman?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did she look like?”
“Dark hair.”
“Did she go inside?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before you came.”
The shadow.
Someone besides Derek might have remained inside.
Police began draining the pool.
The first bag contained Rachel’s purse, laptop, clothing, and shredded accounting files.
The second contained five mobile phones.
The third contained jewelry, wallets, and personal records belonging to people Michael did not recognize.
Then technicians reached the fourth bag.
It was heavier.
Longer.
Deputies became quiet.
Michael felt Emily grip his hand.
They lifted it onto the concrete.
Lena cut the tape carefully.
Inside was not a person.
It was a carpet.
Rolled tightly.
Stained dark at one end.
Crime-scene technicians began testing it.
Michael could not see the result.
But Lena’s expression changed.
“What?”
She looked toward Emily before answering.
“Michael, take her to the ambulance.”
“Why?”
“Now.”
His heart sank.
He carried Emily away.
Behind him, Lena told another detective:
“Get a forensic team.”
The dark stain on the carpet had tested presumptively positive for blood.
Human blood.
And when police checked the hidden-room surveillance archive, they found one recording Derek had failed to delete.
Rachel entered the kitchen the previous night.
She was frightened.
A dark-haired woman followed her.
Then Derek appeared behind both of them.
