Chapter 10 - Family ReunificationNathan refused to press anything.

Police technicians disconnected his phone from the hospital network.

The consent prompt remained visible.

Project Lantern had anticipated isolation. The device carried an offline authorization token linked to Nathan’s biometric signature.

Victoria had copied his signing key.

Amelia had obtained it years earlier.

The hospital already possessed enough data to manufacture approval.

The prompt was not asking permission.

It was testing whether Nathan would cooperate.

Amelia warned him through the intercom.

“If the system sees voluntary consent, it opens the archive cleanly. If it detects forced access, the files fragment.”

“Can you stop it?”

“Not from here.”

Carmen examined Emily while Dr. Mercer checked the child’s chart.

Emily showed signs of repeated sedation and prolonged confinement but no immediate surgical injury.

She carried a small key beneath her hospital bracelet.

Lily had an identical key taped under her mattress beside the syringe.

The two keys opened a storage cabinet inside Sublevel Three.

Police retrieved the second.

Nathan and Carmen inserted them simultaneously.

The Lantern archive began restoring.

Thousands of records appeared.

Birth certificates.

Guardianship transfers.

Hospital admissions.

Payments to caregivers.

Video recordings.

Eight child subjects had been moved through altered identities.

Some biological parents believed they were dead.

Others had signed consent forms during emergencies without understanding the program.

Lantern began as a protected relocation project for children whose families faced credible threats.

Amelia and Sophie were among its first adult consultants.

Then donors discovered the relocated children could be used to test caregiver dependency, medical compliance, and identity replacement.

Protection became experimentation.

Amelia tried to shut it down.

The project declared her dead and confined her inside its own network.

Nathan asked why she continued speaking to Lily through hidden speakers.

“I was trying to keep her awake during the 2:13 medication cycle.”

“Why didn’t you tell her to call me?”

“Victoria monitored every call. Benjamin controlled the doors. The speaker was the only channel I could reach.”

“Why use your own voice?”

“Because Lily remembered me.”

Nathan looked toward the child.

Lily had been three when Amelia disappeared.

She remembered more than Nathan realized.

Amelia revealed another truth.

Victoria had been selected because she resembled Sophie, not Amelia.

Lantern believed a caregiver with similar facial structure would produce faster attachment in Lily.

Victoria’s recruitment was not about romance alone.

It was part of a study.

Victoria listened from police supervision.

“Was anything in my life real?”

Amelia answered through the glass.

“You made real choices after they gave you a false beginning.”

Victoria looked toward Lily.

The child turned away.

The archive identified Project Lantern’s executive administrator.

The name was redacted.

Only a title appeared:

THE CUSTODIAN.

The Custodian approved Victoria’s payments, Benjamin’s access, Mercer’s forged credentials, and the manipulation of Amelia’s records.

One surviving audio file contained the Custodian’s voice.

Nathan played it.

A woman said:

“Room 1204 remains the ideal family-separation environment. Keep the father financially engaged and emotionally uncertain.”

Carmen recognized the voice.

Boston Mercy’s chief nursing officer, Helen Reed.

Her mother.

Carmen had believed Helen died six years earlier from cancer.

Helen’s employment file showed she continued receiving payments from Lantern after her funeral.

Carmen stepped back.

“No.”

Amelia looked at her through the glass.

“Your mother founded the clinical side.”

Carmen’s face hardened.

“Then where is she?”

The archive answered with a live location.

The Custodian was inside Room 1204.

Lily was no longer there.

The officers assigned to protect her lay unconscious in the hallway.

👉 The Lantern archive identified Carmen’s supposedly dead mother as its hidden administrator—and she had entered Room 1204 while everyone was searching the surgical floor.
