Chapter 9 - The Child Wearing Lily’s NameNathan ran toward the surgical floor with police and Dr. Mercer.

Carmen remained beside Lily while officers locked Room 1204.
The scheduled patient had already entered preoperative holding.
Her chart listed Lily’s age, allergies, medical history, and insurance number.
The child on the gurney was Emily.
Benjamin stood beside her wearing a surgical liaison badge.
He attempted to leave through the staff corridor.
Police blocked him.
Emily looked toward Nathan without recognition.
Her hair had been cut to match Lily’s length. She wore the same purple gown.
A nurse had drawn a small star on her wrist, just as Lily’s nurses often did before procedures.
Nathan felt as though the hospital had transformed children into interchangeable paperwork.
“What operation?” Mercer demanded.
The schedule listed an exploratory procedure to remove an implanted monitoring device.
No implant appeared on Emily’s scans.
Benjamin refused to answer.
Carmen reached the holding area moments later, unable to remain behind after learning Emily had been found.
The child saw her.
For the first time, Emily showed emotion.
“Aunt Carmen?”
Carmen stopped.
“You know me?”
“Mommy says you don’t remember.”
“Who is Mommy?”
Emily pointed toward the observation window.
A woman stood behind the glass.
Amelia Cole.
Nathan recognized her instantly.
Older.
Thinner.
Alive.
He moved toward the door.
The observation room locked before he reached it.
Amelia pressed one hand against the glass.
Nathan did the same.
Five years of grief collapsed into one impossible moment.
“Open the door!”
Amelia spoke through the intercom.
“Take the girls out of the hospital.”
“Come with us.”
“I can’t.”
“You built Lantern.”
“I helped design the original protection system. I did not build what it became.”
Nathan looked toward Emily.
“Who is she?”
Amelia’s eyes moved toward Carmen.
“Sophie’s daughter.”
“And Lily?”
Amelia closed her eyes.
“My daughter.”
The genetic records were a deliberate contradiction.
Lantern had mixed maternal profiles to ensure no court could quickly determine custody if the program was exposed.
“Why let me think you were dead?”
“Because the people funding Lantern threatened Lily.”
“You became one of them.”
“I stayed close enough to delay the worst procedures.”
“You approved Victoria.”
“I approved an observer. I did not approve abuse.”
“Then why did your messages say maintain Lily until the trust transferred?”
Amelia looked confused.
“I never sent that.”
Someone was using her identity just as they used Mercer’s, Carmen’s, and Nathan’s.
Nathan demanded she unlock the door.
Amelia shook her head.
“The observation room is sealed from the control level.”
“Who controls it?”
Before she answered, the lights flickered.
Benjamin tore free from an officer and lunged toward Emily’s gurney.
Carmen stepped between them.
He stopped inches from her.
“You don’t know what happens if the girls leave together.”
“What happens?” she asked.
“The protocol ends.”
“That is the point.”
“No. The protocol activates.”
An alarm began pulsing through the surgical floor.
The monitors beside Lily’s and Emily’s records displayed matching countdowns.
Both charts contained hidden implanted-device codes.
Dr. Mercer reviewed the numbers.
“They are not devices inside the children.”
“What are they?”
“Access keys.”
Lily and Emily’s hospital identities were required simultaneously to unlock Project Lantern’s master archive.
Someone had brought both girls back to Boston Mercy to open it.
Amelia looked through the glass.
“They’re not trying to operate on Emily.”
Her voice shook.
“They’re trying to make Nathan sign the release.”
A consent prompt appeared on his phone.
