At twenty-nine, she survived a car accident that left her with a head injury and nearly a year of fragmented memory. Helen handled her rehabilitation before supposedly dying.
Carmen believed she spent that year at a private clinic in Vermont.
Hospital metadata placed her at Boston Mercy.
Not as a nurse.
As a Lantern trainee.
The founder archive contained her personnel file.
CARMEN REED—FAMILY TRANSITION SPECIALIST.
Her assigned task was preparing children to move between biological and replacement caregivers.
Carmen stared at photographs of herself holding toddlers she did not remember.
Emily was among them.
So was Lily.
“I helped them?”
Amelia answered carefully.
“You believed Lantern was rescuing children.”
“Did I restrain anyone?”
“No.”
“Did I falsify records?”
Daniel replied.
“You signed transition reports.”
Carmen turned on him.
“While injured?”
“Your mother said you were capable.”
Helen spoke from guarded observation.
“I kept you close because you were the only person I trusted with the children.”
“You used my damaged memory.”
“I gave you purpose.”
Carmen’s voice dropped.
“You gave me a role I could not remember consenting to.”
Helen’s expression finally showed pain.
The system had not spared its architect’s daughter.
It had simply given her a more honorable cage.
Carmen’s fingerprint on the syringe now made sense.
Years earlier, she handled medical supplies used during transition procedures. Someone recovered one and planted it beneath Lily’s mattress to reactivate her old identity.
The Witness wanted Carmen drawn into the exposure.
Nathan asked why.
Daniel opened the final founder log.
Project Lantern could not be permanently dissolved without signatures from three surviving founders or their legal successors.
Helen.
Amelia.
Daniel.
If one founder was compromised, Carmen inherited Helen’s authority.
If Amelia was declared legally dead, Lily inherited hers.
If Daniel was removed, Nathan inherited his legal position through Cole Systems.
Tonight had gathered all successors inside one hospital.
The entire crisis was designed to make dissolution possible.
Or to transfer control.
Nathan looked toward Lily.
A child’s medical abuse had become the mechanism for restructuring a secret institution worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
“Who benefits if we take over?” he asked.
Daniel answered.
“Cole Systems.”
Lantern’s identity archive controlled insurance settlements, trust accounts, medical patents, and protected properties.
If dissolved incorrectly, Nathan’s company could inherit the infrastructure.
He had entered the night as a father trying to save his daughter.
The system was preparing to make him its owner.
Nathan refused.
“I want the records transferred to independent child advocates.”
Helen laughed softly.
“Independent from whom? Hospitals? Courts? Donors? Technology companies?”
“From us.”
“That is not a legal category.”
Carmen looked at the three founder signatures required.
“We can create one.”
Amelia agreed.
Daniel did not.
“If you fragment the archive, active threats will find the children.”
“If we preserve it under one controller, the next Victoria always appears,” Carmen replied.
The debate remained unresolved when Lily’s monitor alarmed.
Not because she was ill.
Because her wristband had transmitted a new access request.
The Witness had activated Lily’s founder inheritance.
Every door on the twelfth floor locked.
The bathroom speaker turned on.
A child’s voice—not Lily’s—said:
“Please don’t close Lantern. Some of us can’t go home.”
Live feeds appeared across the monitors.
Six children watched from different hidden locations.
One stood beside Benjamin Cross.
Another sat inside Nathan’s own Boston townhouse.
The Witness had entered his home while he was at the hospital.
On the dining-room table lay Amelia’s original wedding ring and a sealed envelope addressed to Lily.
The return name read:
SOPHIE REED.
