Three bedrooms.

Small fenced yard.

Lily asked:

“Are we poor now?”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Daddy said you don’t have money.”

There.

“What does poor mean to you?”

“No house.”

“We have somewhere to live.”

“No toys?”

“You have too many.”

She smiled.

Then:

“Can Daddy take my toys?”

“No.”

“What about my pink kitchen?”

“We’ll figure that out.”

She thought.

“Are you rich?”

I nearly laughed.

Children ask the cleanest questions.

“I have enough to take care of us.”

At four, that was the answer she needed.
