PART 5

Cynthia recovered before the others.

That was her talent.

She could turn panic into elegance faster than most people could breathe.

She stepped toward Lillian with both hands open.

“Sweetheart, this is a misunderstanding.”

Lillian looked at her.

“No.”

“A misunderstanding is when someone hears wrong.”

“This was recorded clearly.”

Colton turned on the security director.

“Get out of my kitchen.”

The director remained still.

“Sir, please step away from Mrs. Vale.”

Colton’s face darkened.

“My wife.”

Lillian’s voice cut through the room.

“Not after this morning.”

Reagan clutched her phone.

“My card is declining.”

Nobody answered her.

Harrison finally looked at Lillian with something like recognition.

Not affection.

Not guilt.

Recognition.

“You are Monroe Trust.”

Lillian nodded.

“Yes.”

Cynthia turned slowly toward him.

“You knew?”

Harrison’s mouth tightened.

“I suspected.”

Cynthia’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked betrayed by the wrong person.

Lillian almost laughed.

Harrison had hidden many things from his wife.

The real size of their debt.

The emergency loans.

The shareholder pressure.

The fact that their luxury life had been floating on approvals from a trust controlled by the woman Cynthia had just watched get slapped.

Colton looked at his father.

“What is she talking about?”

Harrison sat down heavily.

“Her grandfather bought controlling interest after the hotel collapse.”

Reagan frowned.

“What hotel collapse?”

Cynthia snapped, “Be quiet.”

Lillian looked at Colton.

“Your family kept the mansion because my trust chose not to call the debt.”

“Your sister’s cards worked because my trust guaranteed the household line.”

“Your mother’s charity events survived because my trust funded the foundation.”

“And your company still carries the Vale name because I allowed it.”

Colton stared at her.

The arrogance drained out slowly, leaving something smaller underneath.

“You married me knowing this?”

Lillian’s eyes filled.

“I married you hoping it would not matter.”

Then she touched her cheek.

“But you made sure it did.”

The security director stepped closer.

“Mrs. Vale, would you like medical assistance and police contact?”

Cynthia inhaled sharply.

“Police?”

Lillian looked at Colton.

May you like

“Yes.”
