The board meeting happened that afternoon.
Not in the kitchen.
Not in the mansion.
On a secure video call from the estate office while Colton waited outside with a police report, a bruised ego, and no access to his executive dashboard.
Lillian sat at the head of the conference table.
Her cheek was swollen.
Her blouse was changed.
Her expression was calm.
Marianne sat beside her.
On the screen were twelve board members who had spent years calling Harrison “the face of the Vale legacy” while waiting to see when the Monroe Trust would finally act.
Now it had.
Lillian spoke first.
“Effective immediately, Colton Vale is suspended from all executive privileges pending investigation.”
Harrison closed his eyes.
Cynthia, seated behind him, whispered, “Say something.”
He did not.
Lillian continued.
“Cynthia Vale is removed from all foundation spending authority.”
Reagan gasped from the doorway.
“My accounts?”
Lillian looked at her.
“Your personal accounts are yours.”
“The ones funded by the company are closed.”
Reagan’s face collapsed.
“You can’t do that.”
“I just did.”
A board member cleared his throat.
“Mrs. Vale, do you wish to proceed with marital separation protections?”
Colton shouted from the hallway.
“Lillian!”
The security guard blocked him.
Lillian did not turn.
“Yes.”
Cynthia stood.
“You are destroying this family on the second day of marriage.”
Lillian looked at her mother-in-law.
“No.”
“I am ending the system that taught your son he could hit a wife and still inherit a throne.”
Silence followed.
Even Reagan stopped crying.
Harrison finally spoke.
“Lillian.”
His voice was old now.
Tired.
“I am sorry.”
Lillian looked at him.
“For what?”
He swallowed.
“For letting Cynthia build this house around entitlement.”
Lillian’s eyes stayed cold.
“That is a beginning.”
“Not a defense.”
Marianne closed the first folder.
“The protocol will remain active for thirty days while ownership, debt exposure, security access, and domestic safety matters are reviewed.”
Cynthia whispered, “Thirty days?”
Lillian stood.
“No.”
“Thirty days is the review.”
