Chapter 13 - VICTORIA COMES TO THE HOTELWe stayed at a hotel for six nights.

Victoria found us.

Not through stalking software.

My military travel reimbursement email accidentally copied an old family administrative address she still monitored.

Ordinary mistake.

She knocked.

I stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind me.

“Daniel.”

“Leave.”

Her face changed.

“I am your mother.”

“Leave.”

“Maya is lying to you.”

“Then tell your lawyer.”

Her voice lowered.

“She hit Julian.”

Maybe true.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Maya later admitted she slapped Julian while he blocked the bedroom door.

Context mattered.

Victoria continued:

“She destroyed documents.”

Maya had torn up one unsigned transfer packet.

True.

“She threatened to ruin your career.”

False, as far as evidence showed.

“She told us you had given her everything.”

Also false.

Then my mother said:

“You come home after nine months and immediately believe her body over your family?”

I stared.

“My wife has bruises.”

“She bruises easily.”

The sentence was so old it sounded prewritten.

“Leave.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“Julian is your brother.”

“Maya is my wife.”

“She’s turning you against us.”

“No.”

May you like

I opened the hotel door.

“You did that yourselves.”
