Chapter 7 - URGENT CAREThe doctor documented everything.

Maya hated it.
Bruises measured.
Photographed with consent.
Tender ribs.
No acute fracture on imaging.
Healing fracture of one lower rib, probably weeks old.
That was the first injury she had not told me about.
“How?”
She whispered:
“Julian shoved me into the kitchen island.”
I stood near the wall.
The doctor looked at me.
“Sir, I need to speak with your wife alone.”
“Of course.”
I left.
Important.
My presence did not become automatically safe because I had come home angry on her behalf.
Twenty minutes later Maya asked me back.
The physician documented injuries consistent with multiple incidents.
Could she identify who caused them?
No.
