But the named officer had rotated home in December.

The seal number belonged to another office.

My unit records showed I was on convoy operations seventy miles away on the alleged signing date.

Could someone have copied my signature from an older document?

Almost certainly.

Who?

Forensics could not say from ink on copies.

An original later surfaced.

Fingerprints had limited value after handling.

Evidence is rarely polite enough to write the perpetrator’s name across itself.
