Chapter 11 - The Hospital LockdownDr. Lane disconnected Addie’s bed from the central chart system.

“You will not move this child based on a banner someone activated remotely.”

Dr. Vale held up the court order.

“You are interfering with a protected minor’s placement.”

Detective Benton seized the document.

“The issuing judge is under investigation.”

“He has not been removed.”

“No, because your network keeps filing emergency challenges.”

Vale looked toward Emily.

“You are frightening your daughter by turning routine medical care into a conspiracy.”

Addie whispered behind her oxygen mask.

“He watched Luke make the cocoa.”

Vale’s expression barely changed.

“How would I watch from another city?”

“Through the dark phone.”

Claire ordered his phone confiscated.

Vale refused.

Security officers restrained him after he attempted to delete the device.

The screen displayed two live medical feeds.

One belonged to Addie.

The second belonged to a male patient identified as D. Carter.

Daniel.

His heart rate and oxygen level were being monitored from an unknown facility.

Vale had remained connected to him throughout the confrontation.

The third feed showed the hidden seven-year-old girl discovered through the DNA database.

Patient code:

C-3.

No name.

A coffee cup sat beside her bed.

A blue blanket covered her legs.

The room had been prepared to imitate Caleb’s and Addie’s emergencies.

Vale claimed the feed was archived training footage.

The timestamp was live.

A woman entered the room carrying an emergency bag.

Only her hands and gray sleeves appeared.

Emily recognized Margaret Sloan’s suit.

Claire sent tactical officers toward the neurological center connected to Daniel’s monitor.

Vale’s phone suddenly lost all three feeds.

Someone had severed the remote connection.

The hospital lockdown remained active until the state attorney general obtained a superior order suspending Haven Bridge transfers.

No final legal or custody judgment occurred.

Vale’s attorneys challenged the seizure of his phone before investigators finished copying it.

Margaret denied being the woman in the third feed.

“The clothing proves nothing.”

“You knew about C-3,” Emily said.

“I knew Daniel alleged a third embryo.”

“You funded the facility.”

“I fund pediatric programs across three states.”

“Do all of them make children drink allergens?”

Margaret’s voice sharpened.

“You think exposing every confidential placement will help these children? Some are protected from violent parents.”

“That is how your system survives,” Claire said. “You hide real protection cases around the ones you stole.”

Haven Bridge had made itself indispensable.

Hospitals relied on its beds.

Courts relied on its evaluations.

Trusts relied on its administrators.

Removing it without replacing those services could endanger children who genuinely needed help.

Margaret used that risk as moral cover for everything else.

Emily refused to accept the false choice.

“You don’t get to keep Addie because dismantling your cage is complicated.”

The search team reached the neurological center.

The room connected to Daniel’s monitor was empty.

His bed remained warm.

A handwritten note lay beneath the pillow.

MARGARET MOVED ME WHEN CALEB ESCAPED. FOLLOW THE MEDICAL WASTE ROUTE.

Daniel had learned to leave clues inside the systems holding him.

The facility’s medical-waste truck had departed thirty minutes earlier.

Its destination was a decommissioned Carter Bio laboratory near the mountains.

Claire ordered pursuit.

Then Noah’s paramedic radio emitted a private emergency frequency.

A male voice whispered through static.

“This is Daniel Carter. There are two children in the truck.”

Emily seized the radio.

“Daniel?”

“Do not let Margaret reach the old lab.”

“Are you with the third girl?”

A long pause followed.

“No.”

“Then who is the second child?”

Daniel’s answer was almost lost beneath the engine noise.
