Chapter 15 - The Voice on the Paramedic RadioThe live feed lasted eleven seconds.

Then Luke’s smartphone went dark.
Investigators traced the signal through three Haven Bridge servers and a satellite relay registered outside the United States. No physical location could be confirmed.
The girl remained unidentified.
Margaret remained free.
Emily sat beside Daniel’s rehabilitation bed while Claire placed the founder agreement between them.
“Tell me everything.”
Daniel looked toward the hallway, where Addie, Caleb, and Lily sat with independent child advocates.
“I never knew your mother had two babies.”
“You knew something.”
“Susan told me Easton altered her fertility records. She believed one embryo had been stored without consent.”
“An embryo is not an infant twin.”
“No.”
“Margaret showed a photograph of two babies.”
Daniel’s hands shook.
“When I discovered the hidden Carter Trust, it named an original beneficiary before Caleb.”
“Who?”
“Evelyn Carter.”
Emily had never heard the name.
Evelyn was born three minutes before her, then removed from the hospital under a Haven Bridge emergency placement. Susan was told the first baby died.
Years later, Susan discovered the death certificate was false.
She joined Haven Bridge to search from inside.
That was why her signature appeared on transfer documents.
Some signatures may have represented cooperation.
Others may have been attempts to follow the children.
“Did she find Evelyn?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“She feared Margaret would move her again.”
The same explanation.
Silence as protection.
Secrets as love.
Children carrying the consequences.
Noah entered carrying his paramedic radio.
A private frequency had activated.
The signal was identical to the one Daniel used from the medical-waste truck.
But Daniel sat in front of them.
A woman’s voice emerged through static.
“Emily Carter, do not let Daniel complete the story.”
Emily looked toward him.
He went pale.
“Who is that?”
The woman answered before he could.
“My name is Susan Carter.”
Emily’s mother had been declared dead thirteen years earlier.
The voice continued.
“Margaret has Evelyn, but Evelyn is not the child in the video.”
Claire attempted to trace the transmission.
The signal moved.
A vehicle.
Possibly another private ambulance.
Emily gripped the radio.
“Where are you?”
“Going back to the house where Haven Bridge began.”
“Is Evelyn with you?”
“No.”
“Who is the girl?”
Susan hesitated.
Behind her, a child coughed.
A pulse oximeter alarm sounded.
Emily stood.
“What are they doing to her?”
“They’re forcing the final family-recognition test.”
“Who is her mother?”
Susan’s answer dissolved beneath static.
Noah adjusted the receiver.
The transmission cleared for one final sentence.
“She is Addie’s daughter from the future they already planned.”
The line died.
“That makes no sense,” Emily whispered.
Daniel reached for the founder agreement.
Inside its final page was a sealed reproductive authorization bearing Emily’s biometric signature.
The date was six months earlier.
She had never signed it.
The document approved the creation of embryos from genetic samples taken during Addie’s allergy treatment and stored under Carter Trust authority.
Haven Bridge had not stopped with stolen children.
It had begun preparing the next generation before the current children were old enough to understand reproduction, inheritance, or consent.
The hospital monitors in the corridor flickered.
Every Carter child’s chart opened simultaneously.
Caleb.
Addie.
Lily.
The unidentified girl.
A fifth file appeared.
NEXT-GENERATION HEIR—GESTATION ACTIVE.
Emily stared at the screen.
“Who is carrying the baby?”
The door to the protected wing unlocked.
Margaret Sloan stepped from the elevator wearing hospital credentials and carrying the same emergency bag found beside Addie’s couch.
Security officers moved toward her.
She raised a small remote.
Every pulse oximeter on the floor began alarming.
Margaret looked directly at Addie.
“Your breathing lesson was never about punishment.”
Addie clung to Emily.
“Then what was it?”
Margaret smiled.
“It was to see which child inherited the response.”
Behind her, the elevator doors opened again.
Luke stood inside holding the unused injector.
And beside him was the woman Emily had mourned as her mother.
Susan Carter looked at Daniel with hatred.
“You told her the crash was about the trust.”
Daniel tried to rise from his wheelchair.
“What was it really about?”
Susan looked toward the children.
Then toward Noah’s still-recording radio.
“The man who died in that car was not Daniel.”
Emily turned toward her husband’s supposedly dead face.
Daniel whispered, “Emily, don’t listen.”
Susan stepped closer.
“Ask him which child was in the back seat.”
The emergency lights went out.
A small hand reached through the darkness and found Emily’s.
It was not Addie’s.
A girl whispered beside her:
“Mom, I remember the first house.”
