Chapter 9 - The Mother They Declared DelusionalJenna Grant had spent four years inside Ashbury Behavioral Residence.

Her chart described persistent delusions that her dead son remained alive and that her former boyfriend caused his allergic reaction.

The “delusions” were true.

When Detective Benton entered with Caleb’s recent photograph, Jenna stared at it for almost a full minute.

Then she pressed the picture against her chest.

“He grew.”

Her voice broke.

“They told me there was nothing left to bury.”

Ashbury’s director attempted to end the interview, claiming Jenna became unstable when exposed to child-related imagery.

Claire presented the order suspending Haven Bridge’s private access.

For the first time in four years, Jenna spoke without one of their employees listening.

Luke entered her life through Daniel.

During the custody dispute, Daniel hired him to review whether Jenna’s home remained medically safe for Caleb. Luke appeared compassionate and told Jenna he believed the Carter family treated her unfairly.

After Daniel’s crash, Luke helped her challenge the trust.

Then he moved into her house.

Caleb’s allergy attacks began.

“I saw Luke pour something into his cup,” Jenna said. “He told me it was protein powder.”

She tried to call police after the final emergency. Judge Caine ordered an immediate psychiatric evaluation based on Luke’s claim that she threatened to harm herself and abduct Caleb.

Dr. Vale diagnosed her with grief-induced psychosis.

Margaret Sloan signed the trust funds that paid for the confinement.

“Did Daniel ever contact you after the crash?” Emily asked through a secure connection.

Jenna looked at her.

“One voicemail.”

She had hidden the recording inside an old music account Haven Bridge never discovered.

Daniel’s voice played through the hospital speaker.

“Jenna, I survived. Do not trust the death certificate. Luke took my briefcase. Margaret knows St. Orison isn’t a hospital. Protect Caleb, and tell Emily the clinic switched the samples.”

Emily looked toward Claire.

“What samples?”

Jenna closed her eyes.

Both women had undergone fertility treatment while married to Daniel.

Caleb was conceived at Easton Reproductive Center after doctors diagnosed Daniel with low fertility.

Years later, Emily used the same clinic to conceive Addie.

Luke Mercer worked in its embryology laboratory.

Jenna had discovered his name in Caleb’s sealed records shortly before the respiratory emergency.

She believed Luke replaced Daniel’s samples.

“Are you saying Luke may be Caleb’s biological father?” Emily asked.

“And Addie’s.”

The room became silent.

Independent DNA testing was ordered under a sealed court authorization.

Luke fought the testing through his attorney, arguing that his genetic information could not be used without consent.

Detective Benton obtained a sample from the coffee cup Luke had used before Emily arrived. His DNA remained on the rim.

The preliminary comparison arrived that evening.

Luke was Caleb’s biological father.

Emily stared at the result until the letters blurred.

Addie’s test followed.

Luke was her biological father too.

Daniel had raised both children believing they were his.

Legally, they remained Daniel’s heirs under the trust.

Biologically, Luke had created them through fertility fraud.

He later entered both mothers’ lives, triggered medical crises, and positioned himself to claim parental authority if the truth emerged.

Luke had not merely selected two vulnerable children.

He had manufactured his connection to them before birth.

Caleb sat beside Addie when the child advocate explained that DNA did not decide who deserved trust.

Addie looked toward Emily.

“Is Luke my real daddy?”

Emily knelt.

“He is biologically connected to you.”

“Is that the same?”

“No.”

“What makes someone a daddy?”

“What they choose to do after you need them.”

Addie looked at the oxygen mask beside her bed.

“Then he isn’t.”

The answer came from a five-year-old with more clarity than every legal document surrounding her.

The DNA report included another match.

A third child existed in the national laboratory database with Luke’s genetic profile and a Carter fertility-clinic identifier.

The child was female.

Approximately seven years old.

Her status was marked:
