Chapter 8 - The Ambulance Without a DestinationState police located the St. Orison ambulance twenty-three miles west of Richmond.

It ignored the first command to stop.
The driver accelerated.
No emergency lights were active, and no hospital had requested the transport.
Noah remained on the police radio, interpreting the medical signal.
“His saturation is seventy-eight. They’re withholding oxygen.”
Emily sat inside the command vehicle clutching Addie’s hand.
Addie had refused to remain at the hospital without her. Dr. Lane permitted transfer only under medical supervision and continuous oxygen access.
“Is Caleb going to die?” she asked.
“No,” Emily said.
She did not know whether it was a promise or a prayer.
Police deployed a road barrier near an interchange.
The ambulance turned onto an abandoned service road and stopped beneath a railway bridge.
Officers approached with weapons lowered but ready.
The driver’s compartment was empty.
A maintenance hatch stood open.
Someone had abandoned the vehicle through the rear and disappeared into the woods.
Caleb lay strapped to the stretcher.
His lips were pale, but he was conscious.
An oxygen mask rested beside his face without being connected.
A male paramedic from the police medical team administered treatment.
Caleb’s oxygen improved slowly.
Emily watched from a distance until a child specialist confirmed he could tolerate visitors.
He looked smaller than ten.
His hair had been cut close to his scalp, and faded adhesive marks covered his arms.
When Addie entered, Caleb stared at her as though she were a person from a dream.
“You’re real,” he whispered.
Addie climbed onto the chair beside the bed.
“Luke said you died.”
“He told me you didn’t want a brother.”
The children studied each other cautiously.
No instant bond appeared.
Only recognition that someone had built opposite lies around them.
Caleb asked for his mother.
Emily told him Jenna had not been located yet.
His expression closed.
“Dr. Vale said she forgot me.”
“She didn’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I’m going to find her.”
Caleb reached beneath his hospital shirt and removed a folded strip of plastic.
He had hidden it against his skin before the ambulance transfer.
It contained a storage key and part of a photograph.
Daniel Carter stood beside an office safe.
On the back was a handwritten message:
The crash did not kill me. Haven Bridge did.
Emily stopped breathing.
Caleb said Daniel gave him the photograph at Pine Ridge two years earlier.
“You saw your father?”
“He was in the downstairs room.”
“Was he alive?”
Caleb nodded.
“He couldn’t walk right. Dr. Vale said his brain was broken.”
“Where is the downstairs room?”
“They moved him when the trust lady started visiting more.”
The storage key belonged to a facility near Charlottesville.
Police opened the unit.
Inside were Daniel’s missing briefcase, family records, medical files, and several hard drives. One drive contained footage of Daniel recorded eighteen months after his official death.
He sat in a rehabilitation bed with a scar along his temple.
“If Emily sees this, Luke has already entered her life.”
Emily gripped the edge of the table.
Daniel continued.
“He worked at the fertility clinic before Haven Bridge recruited him. He knows why Caleb and Addie must never be tested together.”
The recording ended before explaining.
Claire found another folder labeled JENNA GRANT—MATERNAL INSTABILITY.
It contained a current address.
A psychiatric residence operated by Haven Bridge.
Jenna had not disappeared.

She had been confined under a guardianship order signed by Judge Caine.
👉 Caleb was rescued, but Daniel’s hidden recording revealed that Luke’s connection to both children began before either of them was born.
