Officer Brooks obtained a warrant to search it.
Inside a cedar chest, investigators found nursing uniforms, Aster badges, and a metal box protected by a combination lock.
The code was Maya’s birth date.
The box contained letters addressed to Laura but never mailed.
In the first, Katherine confessed that she worked for Project Lantern after Daniel’s disappearance. She believed she could protect Maya by remaining inside the program.
She monitored implant candidates, altered dosage schedules, and secretly prevented several procedures.
But Olivia’s death changed everything.
Katherine wrote:
I entered the room to shut the device down. Director M had already increased the release. My badge preserved the final command under Lawson’s account. Emma may believe I killed her sister. I failed to save her, but I did not begin the dose.
The distinction mattered.
It did not erase the guilt Katherine carried.
Another letter described Maya’s implantation.
Katherine tried to stop Helen Mercer but arrived after surgery. Robert threatened to expose Katherine’s own role in Aster if she told Laura.
So Katherine chose silence and attempted to monitor Maya from a distance.
Laura lowered the page.
“She visited us every week.”
Maya remembered her grandmother asking strange questions.
Did her stomach hurt?
Did she feel warm at night?
Did she ever hear a faint buzzing near her bed?
Katherine knew about the transmitter.
She never told them why.
The final letter contained the identity of Director M.
Margaret Blake.
Daniel’s mother.
Laura’s former mother-in-law.
Margaret had not died when Daniel was nineteen. Her death had been staged after federal investigators questioned the early genetic studies she financed.
She continued controlling Meridian under hidden identities.
Daniel knew his mother was alive.
He had concealed that from Laura.
Officer Brooks confronted him.
Daniel admitted Margaret visited Harbor Light throughout his captivity.
“She said the program would protect Maya from governments and corporations that wanted the marker.”
“By experimenting on her?” Laura asked through the secured call.
“My mother believed controlled research was the only way to keep the discovery inside the family.”
“She used children.”
“She believed the alternative was worse.”
“Did you?”
Daniel looked toward Sophie’s guarded room.
“For too long.”
Margaret used Daniel, Robert, Helen, Katherine, and Lawson’s credentials against one another. Each person believed secrecy protected someone.
The result was a system no one dared expose because everyone had participated in part of it.
Laura asked where Margaret was.
Daniel had last seen her three months earlier at a private estate near Lake Briar.
The property belonged to Robert.
Federal agents searched it.
They found abandoned medical equipment, family photographs, and a nursery converted into a monitoring room.
One wall displayed Maya’s life from infancy to adolescence.
School pictures.
Dental X-rays.
Sports schedules.
Images taken through bedroom windows.
Another wall displayed Sophie Grant.
A third displayed a boy named Ethan Blake.
Daniel’s missing son.
The newest photograph showed Ethan as an adult standing beside Margaret.
He wore a physician’s coat and an orange badge.
Under the image, someone had written:
LANTERN ONE—SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION.
Ethan had not escaped the program.
He had become part of it.
The estate’s live monitors activated.
An older woman appeared from a remote location.
Margaret Blake looked directly into the camera.
“Laura, Maya’s implant was never the experiment.”
“What was?”
