Robert had not yet entered her life publicly.
But a “bereavement adviser” from Meridian helped organize the paperwork.
Hospital security recovered a photograph from the funeral home.
The adviser was Robert.
He wore different glasses and introduced himself as Luke Harris.
Laura had met him thirteen years before believing they met.
He obtained dozens of signatures while she grieved.
Those signatures became the foundation for research approvals, corporate appointments, and medical authorizations.
Robert later waited until enough time passed to approach her under his real first name.
He did not simply manipulate their marriage.
He built it from a prior deception.
Maya watched the funeral photograph.
“He picked us.”
“Yes,” Laura said.
“Because of me.”
“Because he believed he could control us.”
“That isn’t the same?”
“No. You are not the reason he chose to do evil.”
The family-court hearing began remotely while Maya remained hospitalized.
Robert appeared beside his attorney wearing a dark suit and a concerned expression.
He described himself as a frightened father watching Laura reject medically necessary treatment.
His attorney presented the forged approvals bearing Laura’s signature.
They showed years of supposed consent.
Then Laura’s attorney played the funeral-home footage.
Robert’s face changed when the younger version of himself appeared behind the grieving widow.
Judge Caine ordered the video authenticated before considering it.
He did not dismiss Robert’s petition.
Meridian’s network still surrounded the case.
Dr. Lawson testified that Maya’s implant had been unauthorized and dangerous.
Robert’s attorney presented Lawson’s signature on the original device design.
“You helped create the technology.”
“For adult patients who understood the risks.”
“You accepted Meridian money.”
“Eight years before Maya’s procedure.”
“You never ensured your design was destroyed.”
Lawson had exposed a dangerous program but failed to follow the technology after resigning.
That failure did not make him responsible for Robert’s actions.
It did make his innocence incomplete.
Emma testified about Olivia.
The defense called her grief-driven and biased.
Then she produced her sister’s original ultrasound and toxicology results, preserved outside Aster’s system.
The device had caused Olivia’s fatal internal bleeding.
The judge temporarily suspended Robert’s medical authority over Maya.
No final custody or criminal ruling occurred.
Outside the virtual hearing, Robert sent Laura a message.
Ask Lawson why Olivia’s implant activated on the night she died.
The archived logs had been damaged, but Emma reconstructed the final command.
It came from Lawson’s hospital account.
Lawson stared at the result.
“I was in surgery that night.”
“Can you prove it?” Brooks asked.
“Yes.”
Operating-room records placed him elsewhere.
Someone used his credentials.
Again.
The source terminal was inside Olivia’s own recovery room.
A nurse had activated the device while standing beside her bed.
Emma searched the staff list.
The nurse was named Katherine Blake.
Laura’s mother.
Katherine had died five years earlier after a stroke.
Laura remembered that her mother worked in pediatric care but never knew she had any connection to Aster.
