“Parents accept almost any authority when fear is timed correctly.”
Laura stood inside Maya’s hospital room, holding the phone through which the live feed played.
“You made her sick so I would return her to you.”
“We created a controlled dependency.”
“You call that control?”
“Without the stabilizer, her immune response may become fatal.”
Dr. Lawson interrupted.
“Give us the complete formula.”
Margaret smiled.
“You have most of it.”
“What is the missing compound?”
“A protein synthesized from Lantern One’s blood.”
Ethan.
Daniel’s son carried a stronger version of the regenerative marker. Meridian used his blood-derived protein to stabilize other subjects after triggering inflammation.
Maya’s monthly injections depended on material produced from her half-brother.
“Where is Ethan?” Daniel demanded through the federal connection.
Margaret ignored him.
She offered to deliver enough stabilizer for Maya’s lifetime.
In exchange, Laura would sign a confidentiality agreement, withdraw all accusations, and allow Meridian to retain Maya’s biological data.
“No.”
“Maya may not survive your principles.”
Laura’s voice shook, but she did not retreat.
“You designed that choice. I reject it.”
“You cannot reject biology.”
“No. I reject your ownership of it.”
Lawson believed the missing protein could be reproduced if they obtained Ethan’s medical data or a lawful blood sample.
Margaret claimed Ethan participated voluntarily.
Daniel did not believe her.
The Lake Briar computers contained a recorded interview with Ethan.
He looked directly at the camera.
“My father abandoned us. My grandmother saved me.”
His voice was calm, but his hands trembled beneath the table.
He described Meridian as his family and Project Lantern as his purpose.
Then a second video began after he thought the interview had ended.
Margaret entered the room.
“If Daniel contacts you, what do you say?”
“That he left me.”
“And if Maya asks for the stabilizer?”
“She has to join the program.”
Ethan had been conditioned to see his half-sister’s survival as leverage.
Maya watched the recording.
“He thinks I’m taking something from him.”
“He was taught that,” Laura said.
“Like Robert taught me hospitals were expensive because I complained too much.”
“Yes.”
Maya looked toward Lawson.
“Can I live without Ethan?”
“We are building a replacement therapy.”
“That means you don’t know.”
“No.”
She appreciated the honest answer more than reassurance.
Federal agents traced Margaret’s transmission to a moving medical train owned by Meridian Logistics. It was traveling south toward North Carolina.
Ethan’s biometric monitor appeared onboard.
So did Helen Mercer’s.
Agents prepared an interception.
Robert’s attorney filed an emergency injunction claiming Ethan was an adult participating in protected research and could not be detained without evidence of coercion.
Again, legal procedure slowed rescue while the train kept moving.
Emma discovered a handwritten note inside Katherine’s box.
Ethan is not the only source of the stabilizing protein. Maya produces it after the fourth activation cycle. Margaret never told Robert.
Maya had completed three full cycles.
The ruptured implant began the fourth.
Her body might soon produce the protein naturally.
Or the cycle could cause catastrophic inflammation before it did.
Margaret had increased the dose not merely to punish Maya.
She wanted to force the final transition.
Robert may not have understood the real purpose.
His phone contained messages demanding that he keep Maya home until the pain reached a specific level.
He believed the episode would strengthen his guardianship case.
Margaret was using him to complete the experiment.
Officer Brooks played Robert the messages during questioning.
His face lost color.
“She said the pain would stop.”
“You trusted her with a child’s body,” Brooks replied.
“She said Maya would become independent of the injections.”
“And you chose to believe the outcome justified the suffering.”
Robert demanded protection in exchange for the train’s destination.
Before he could reveal it, the hospital laboratory sounded an emergency alarm.
Maya’s blood had begun producing the unknown stabilizing protein.
At the same time, her temperature climbed dangerously.
