The facility stood beyond a rusted gate near the Chesapeake coast. Its windows had been boarded from outside, but generators powered the lower floors.
The first level contained abandoned therapy rooms.
The basement remained fully operational.
Medical beds lined one corridor. Orange stickers marked each door.
Lantern One.
Lantern Two.
Lantern Three.
Most rooms were empty.
Room Four contained a sixteen-year-old girl connected to an IV and a cardiac monitor.
Her name was Sophie Grant.
She had been reported missing two years earlier after leaving a school dance in Maryland.
The public story claimed she ran away.
She had been held inside Harbor Light while Meridian tested another version of the implant.
Unlike Maya, Sophie had known a device was inside her. Staff told her it treated a rare immune disorder.
She did not know the disorder had been induced.
Daniel was found in a secured office at the far end of the basement.
He was alive, thin, and walking with a cane. Scar tissue crossed one side of his neck.
He had spent thirteen years under different medical identities while trying to gather evidence from inside Meridian.
Agents removed him under guard.
He was both victim and possible participant.
Laura saw him first through a protected hospital video connection.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Maya watched from her recovery bed.
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“You have your mother’s eyes.”
Maya’s face remained guarded.
“You knew they put something in me.”
“Yes.”
“You let them?”
“No.”
“Then why didn’t you come home?”
Daniel explained.
He discovered Meridian’s genetic program shortly after Maya’s birth. The rare marker did not merely accelerate tissue repair. It allowed certain cells to recover after extreme chemical damage.
Meridian believed the trait could transform organ treatment, military medicine, and anti-aging research.
Daniel ordered Maya’s blood test before understanding how the data would be used.
When he tried to delete the result, Meridian threatened Laura and the baby.
He staged the boating accident to enter federal protection.
The protection operation was compromised.
Harbor Light intercepted him.
For years, he was forced to review patents and participant agreements while Meridian used his credentials.
“Why would they keep you alive?” Maya asked.
“The marker came from my family.”
Daniel carried a weaker version.
So did several children created or identified through Meridian’s fertility and adoption networks.
Laura stared at him.
“What other children?”
Daniel looked toward the camera.
“I had a son before we met.”
Laura had never known.
The boy, Ethan Blake, disappeared with his mother after Meridian learned about the family marker. Daniel believed they escaped overseas.
Harbor Light’s records showed Ethan had become Lantern One.
His file ended eight years earlier with the word transferred.
No destination.
Sophie Grant was not biologically related to Daniel. Meridian found her marker through school-based genetic screening.
Maya was different.
Her results came directly from her father.
That made Daniel’s family the foundation of Project Lantern.
Dr. Lawson asked who authorized Maya’s implantation.
Daniel answered:
“My sister.”
Laura frowned.
Daniel had always claimed to be an only child.
His sister was Dr. Helen Mercer.
Robert’s older sister.
Robert was not merely an opportunistic stepfather recruited by Meridian.
He was Daniel’s brother-in-law.
The families had been connected long before Laura met either man.
Helen married Daniel’s estranged brother, Michael Mercer, then disappeared into Meridian’s medical network.
Robert used his mother’s surname professionally to conceal the relationship.
Laura looked at Daniel in disbelief.
“You knew Robert?”
“Yes.”
“Did you send him to me?”
“No.”
“Did you know he married me?”
“Not until two years ago.”
Daniel had tried to contact Laura through hidden messages in Maya’s implant. Most were blocked.
The recent shutdown command was the first that reached the device directly.
Maya looked at him.
“You could control it too.”
“I could access the emergency stop.”
“Could you activate it?”
Daniel’s silence lasted too long.
Lawson leaned toward the screen.
“Answer her.”
“Yes.”
Daniel could have changed the dosage.
He claimed he never did.
But the data log contained hundreds of commands under his name.
Someone had used his credentials—or he had not told the full truth.
Then Sophie woke inside Harbor Light’s medical transport.
She saw Daniel through the glass and screamed.
