She requested separate counsel before answering further questions. Judge Lang permitted her to consult an attorney in a side conference room, but she refused to leave the courtroom without surrendering her devices first.
“I want everything copied before he makes another story about me.”
Julian laughed.
“You lived in my apartment, spent my money, and wore my wife’s jewelry. Do not pretend you are a victim.”
Nora removed the emerald bracelet.
She placed it on the evidence table.
“You gave me this after telling me Iris signed the divorce settlement.”
Iris examined it from a distance.
Her mother’s initials remained engraved beneath the clasp.
The bracelet had disappeared from the mansion while Iris was confined.
Marcus asked where Julian obtained it.
Nora answered.
“Dr. Voss brought a box from St. Arden. Julian removed the bracelet and burned the rest.”
“What was inside the box?”
“Medical files. A voice recorder. A sealed letter addressed to Iris.”
Julian stood.
“She is lying.”
Nora looked at him.
“You told me the letter proved Iris wanted you to control the company.”
Marcus requested the date.
It matched the night Voss activated the patent freeze.
Nora had photographed several pages before Julian destroyed them. Her cloud backup contained one partial image.
The letter began:
Iris, if Julian reaches this before you do, he has already tried to turn my silence into consent.
The remaining paragraph had been covered by Julian’s hand.
Iris looked at Nora.
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
“I believed you were dangerous.”
“Because Julian said so?”
“Because he showed me videos of you screaming at him.”
Iris remembered the clinic room.
She had screamed while Julian ordered staff to restrain her and remove her phone.
He recorded only her reaction.
Nora had seen the edited version.
“I wanted what he promised,” Nora continued. “That made his lies easier to accept.”
She did not ask to be excused.
Her eight-percent consulting trust contained more than company shares. It received payments from the clinic, Julian’s shell companies, and a veterans’ rehabilitation charity.
Nora had spent part of the money.
She had also preserved financial statements after noticing withdrawals she did not recognize.
Those statements revealed that her trust paid Hale Ridge for Eva’s confinement.
The payment authorization used Nora’s biometric identity.
Julian had copied her fingerprint from the champagne glass she used at a company retreat.
A security photograph showed his assistant placing the glass inside a sealed evidence bag afterward.
Nora stared at him.
“You collected my fingerprint before our affair began.”
Julian’s expression remained hard.
“You were being evaluated for executive access.”
“You were preparing to own me.”
He did not answer.
Marcus traced the Hale Ridge transfers.
The recipient account belonged to a holding company called Gray Lantern.
Its authorized representative was Preston Shaw—Julian’s own divorce attorney.
The courtroom turned toward him.
Preston removed his glasses.
“I provide compliance services to hundreds of companies.”
“Did you provide services to a facility holding Eva Mercer under a false identity?” Marcus asked.
“I did not know who occupied the building.”
Judge Lang ordered Preston’s devices secured.
Julian suddenly lacked his attorney.
An emergency public defender was called to advise him regarding possible criminal exposure.
Nora’s recovered statements contained one more transfer.
Five million dollars moved from Gray Lantern to a private account two days after Iris escaped.
The account owner was Marcus Hale.
Marcus looked at the page.
“I never received that money.”
The routing number matched an account opened with his Social Security number, his signature, and a photograph of his passport.
The evidence framing him was stronger than anything found so far.
Then Iris noticed the account’s mailing address.
It belonged to St. Arden Clinic.
